I've heard that cigar saying forever, just looked up where it came from:

The phrase "close, but no cigar" originated in the early 20th century at American carnivals where cigars were common prizes for winning games of skill or chance. The carnival barker would say "close, but no cigar" to those who nearly won but didn't get a prize.
