You lob one of the Iceberg Lettuce into the lava pool and watch in anticipation. At first, the head of lettuce kind of plops onto the hot sticky goo like a soccer ball landing in heavy mud. Then from beneath the lettuce, little blobs of lava start sputtering in all directions. You wonder if it was stupid to stay so close, but you are frozen in fascination as you watch the bottom of the lettuce begin to soften, then char as the intensity of the sputtering increases. Suddenly the sputtering subsides and you notice the area around the head of lettuce become darker as it cools and hardens. You continue to look on in amazement as this single head of lettuce seems to be cooling the entire pool. The runner on the other side of the pool has noticed your handy-work and seems excited by the prospect of being freed from this room and begins shifting side to side in anticipation. It reaches out over the lava but pulls back immediately as the residual heat is still intense. It might take over-night before it cools enough to cross.
