I think I had mentioned in another comment that a potential downside would be that in avoiding one negative situations doesn't mean that the outcome has to be better! It could be worse, either for your loved ones, or larger picture (society, humankind)... also, if you only help one group of people, it could be that you accidentally disadvantage other groups!
