Matthew Chapter 5 Verses from 1 to 12

5: 1 Seeing the multitude, he went up into the mountain; and sitting down, his disciples came to him.
5: 2 And opening his mouth he taught them, saying:
5: 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
5: 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will receive consolation.
5: 5 Blessed are the meek, for they shall receive the land for an inheritance.
5: 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
5: 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will obtain mercy.
5: 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
5: 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
5:10 Blessed are those who suffer persecution for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
5:11 Blessed are you when they revile you and persecute you for my sake, and say all manner of evil against you, lying.
5:12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven; for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Jesus' sermon begins with a description of those who would be blessed by God. For example: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied" (Matthew 5: 6).
The verses begin with the word Blessed (Matthew 5: 3-11), they are commonly known as "Beatitudes" which signify a level of great joy. In essence, Jesus is affirming that these perspectives would become mental states for all those who were to be his disciples.
