STEEMCHURCH: How long, Lord? Will you be angry forever?

in #steemchurch6 years ago (edited)

Psalm 79: 1-4
A psalm of Asaph.
1 O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;
they have defiled your holy temple,
they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
2 They have left the dead bodies of your servants
as food for the birds of the sky,
the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild.
3 They have poured out blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there is no one to bury the dead.
4 We are objects of contempt to our neighbors,
of scorn and derision to those around us.

Dear friends

This psalm was written by a righteous man in praise of God in the temple of Jerusalem called Asaf who witnessed the massacre of the people of Israel, in his psalm he presents us the harsh reality that the people of God had to live and the national clamor that was raised to God by the survivors.

Both the temple and the city where it was built, Jerusalem, were considered sacred places by the Jews, but as a consequence of their sin, the non-Jewish nations, in this case Babylon and its allies, desecrated the inheritance of God, trampled the sacred and they left it reduced to rubble.

This is one of the consequences of all sin. Once the sin is committed, it opens the door for the destroyer to profane what belongs to God.

In spite of sin, and in spite of God's discipline because of sin, the ear of God is always attentive to the sinner's prayer. It is true that when we have sinned and when we are receiving the just discipline for sin, we think that God will not be willing to listen to us, but it is not so. In the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15 11:32) we see that the father was waiting with open arms for his wayward son.

Through prayer to the Lord we will find a merciful and compassionate Father. With a humble heart we must show the Lord how sorry we are of our sin and how willing we are to turn away from it, and we will see how God will give us a hug of forgiving love.

Psalm 79 has the tone of a lamentation and a plea from all the people of Israel. It uses a famous biblical symbol, that of the shepherd and his flock. The Lord is invoked as "shepherd of Israel." From the top of the ark of the covenant, sitting on the cherubs, the Lord guides his flock, his people, and protects him in danger.

May God do justice to his people. The Lord does not owe us anything because we are sinners. Let him consider, however, his own honor, that he free and raise the righteous.

We cry to the Lord who has filled us with so many blessings, grant us to reach the gifts of salvation and that we never stop praising Him. For Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

Excellent explanation about the prayer that this psalm presents for the lament and destruction of Israel at the hands of its enemies, but we can also look at the presence of a merciful God that the psalmist highlights in this lament.

God bless you. Thanks for sharing @felixgarciap.
