Satanic Magic is one of the central aspects of Satanism, and one of those that causes more interest and curiosity in the neophytes. It is also one of the most frequently misunderstood. Here we will clarify what Satanism understands by "magic".

Definition of Satanic Magic

In the Satanic Bible, Anton LaVey defines magic as "the change of situations or events according to one's will, which, otherwise, could not be changed". The phrase is intentionally ambiguous. The first question that usually originates is "Is magic an art related to the supernatural?"

It is first necessary to make a distinction between the supernatural and the unexplained. Satanism does not conceive magic as a supernatural phenomenon, but as an unexplained phenomenon. Magic is not something that contradicts or breaks the rules of nature, but is part of nature and obeys its rules, only that who falls under the influence of magic does not know the specific rules that make it work.

Throughout human history, many natural phenomena have been seen as magical, simply because those who saw them did not have an explanation for them. An eclipse may seem magical in the eyes of those who know nothing about astronomy.

The scenic magic of the illusionist is "magic" because it produces bewilderment and admiration in people who have no way of explaining what they are seeing. The audience knows that there is nothing supernatural in what the magician does, but not knowing what is the procedure performed to obtain that effect, he has nothing to do but fascinate with the spectacle and the power of the magician.

Even the magician can ignore his own tricks. There are people with a natural predisposition to produce a magical effect on those around them, such as seducers or born leaders, and can not explain or explain what they do to produce that effect, which does not make that effect less real.

The Satanist magician and witch know that phenomena such as love, attraction, trust and enthusiasm can seem "magical" in the eyes of those who feel them, but that they can be produced at will very effectively, when they have knowledge and the practice to develop that power.

White Magic and Black Magic

In popular speech, there is usually a distinction between White Magic or Protective and black or destructive Magic. Satanism does not make that distinction, since every form of magic starts from self-interest or selfishness to produce a change, either for the benefit or harm of someone.

Lesser Magic and Greater Magic

There are two kinds of Magic. The Lesser Magic (also called "Non-Ritual Magic") is the one that uses tricks to attract and maintain the attention of people, for manipulative purposes. In this sense, appearance plays an important role, understood not only as a physical aspect but also as attitude and behavior. According to LaVey there are three vectors of manipulation: sex (producing sexual desire in another person), feeling (producing an emotional bond) and amazement (producing admiration and / or surprise).

The Greater Magic or Ritual Magic involves three types of rituals, which can be individual or group. According to LaVey, there are three types of rituals, which coincide with the three basic human emotions: desire, compassion and destruction. The ritual of desire, also known as sex ritual, is precisely intended to create the desire on the part of the person one wants to possess. The compassionate or sentimental ritual serves to help or bring success to someone or to oneself. Finally, the ritual of destruction or curse is to express hatred, anger or contempt.
