Spiritual Immature people are those who have prolonged infancy and stagnancy. They are spiritual infants in Christ with stunted growth.
Why are so many people in this predicament of stunted growth and infancy? It is because of poor digestion. We have been feeding on milk and not on meat. Imagine a twenty years old person, who is about to go to school and says,
“Mummy can I have my feeding bottle please?”
I am sure the mother will roll on the floor and start crying.
“1 Corinthians 3:2-3 King James Version (KJV)
2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?”
It is exactly the same picture with us believers. We have been born again for between one to five years and all the time we go to God to ask for forgiveness. When will we leave that department and go on to something better, to the mountain top where God wants us to be. Poor digestion; We the people, have been feeding on milk and not on meat, for milk is for babies.
A lot of modern day Christians hate Bible studies and aggressive prayer meetings. We prefer a situation, where we gather people who can play disco music very well and someone can speak a little American English to talk to us, then we will begin to hail him and say,
“Yes! Preach it! Yeah! Oh! mention it! Jump up! Stand up! Oh!”
Some of us now reading this post we are responsible for making these ministers fall, because when the man was talking absolute rubbish we were hailing him. Instead of him to go and study his Bible, fast and pray, he believes he has made it because we were hailing him as a good pastor.
This post is about spiritual immaturity; milk are for infants while strong meat are for the matured people. The trouble about milk is that it is always a second hand food. It will first of all be processed in the breast before being passed on to the baby. But a time will come when that child will be introduced to solid food. So, if we as Christians are yet to learn the art of sitting down, reading our Bible and drawing out strength from it by ourselves without the help of any Pastor, then we are still a baby Christian who will always want processed food.
There is no Pastor or Preacher who can preach everything. It is not possible; there are some things you have to do on your own. The purpose of Christian meetings is for us to gather together and allow iron to begin to sharpen iron.
Again spiritually immatured worshippers are slaves to their emotions; when a decision is to be taken, they will say,
“does this please me? Does it benefit me?”
But matured worshippers will ask,
“does it please God? Does it benefit God.”
When someone shouts at us and we want to respond and the Holy Spirit says, "wait, is your response going to glorify me?" then we should know what our response should be. Here is a story I heard in church few months ago:
Two believers were fighting one day and old Pastor was watching them. He told both of them to stop fighting and keep quiet. They refused and he said, “Well I have only one thing for you, after that you can continue fighting.” He then opened his Bible to the place where it says, “Whatsoever you do, do it to the glory of God.”
After this, he told them to continue fighting.
–Emotion triggered this fight.
When we are easily moved by feelings and emotions, it is a sign that we are baby Christians. Apostle Peter used to be like that before. One moment he was walking on the water, the next moment he was sinking. One moment he made a glorious confession about Christ, by declaring Him as the “Christ of God.” The next moment, the same Peter told Jesus not to go and die on the cross and this made Jesus rebuke him sharply. One moment, he said he would lay down his life for Jesus, the next moment he had denied him.
However, by the time he got to the Pentecost day, the marks of immaturity had disappeared from the life of Peter, He was a changed person.
To get out of spiritual immaturity the first thing to do is to make a frank confession with God about our condition.
“Lord, we still get angry, We fight with people, We tell lies, We beat up our wives, We cheat people, We drink, We are lazy.” We should be Frank with the Lord, we should not pamper ourselves. We should tell God who we are; “This is our life, We are like this.”
We should ask the Lord to forgive us of every sin of spiritual immaturity, where we spoke and we shouldn't speak. When we got angry, when we should not have been angry.
Ask we do this may the Lord God fill us with spiritual maturity.
