UI Proposal: Change "Upvote" to "Upsteem"

in #steemcity7 years ago (edited)

It may look like a small addition, but I think it's important. Here's why:

  • "upsteem" is closer to the name of the site, it's not voteit.com, it's steemit.com
  • "upsteem" will make it easier for people to understand what's happening when they are clicking that arrow - it's not like they're electing the content in some electoral college, but they are driving away steem from the rewards pool
  • since voting is such a common activity, changing the name to be closer to the site name will help with brand awareness
  • it will make the site stand apart from other sites which are using appreciation input and create an identity (just like "Like" is almost a Facebook patent)
  • it will give people a nice, personal touch: the self-esteem goes up

If you agree, let me know in the comments. If you don't agree, let me know in the comments as well.

Upsteem makes sense.. how about steemup?

Was my first guess too, but try to use it in a sentence.
"Did you upsteem this" sounds much better than
"Did you steemup / steemuped this"

Just steemup'd your suggestion ;)

Haha. .Thanks a lot @gigafart .. you know what GyaniBilli means? Wise Cat :)

Steemup doesn't sound so bad, but upsteem is what I'd prefer personally.

Upsteem is closer to the idea. I vouch for that. It will be upsteem and resteem. So it be simple to understand.

I was thinking the button should be labeled simply "Steemit." But then I realized how awkward it would sound if everyone was going around saying, "Hey, I Steemited your post." "Upsteemed" sounds better.

Additionally, Steemit is only one front end of many. How should you call it when you use busy.org or eSteem? ; )

Good point. I guess they'll probably call it something different on each site / app.

Interesting proposal :)

I like that! branding!

I was also thinking the other day after making my feature proposal, that instead of "blog" the word "streem" as a combination of own posts and resteems would make sense.

streem sounds good too, I like it.

Sounds great, "upsteem" makes more sense since it is the act of giving the post steem so we "upsteem" the post. If we upvote, this does not indicate that the post is being paid. Good for branding also.

Disagree. One person who arrives for the first time to Steemit doesn't need any explanation about what "upvote" is.

"Upsteem" could be understood as "if I click here then STEEM price will go up", which is not the case.

"Don't put your baby in a microwave."
I'm against adjusting everything to the weakest part in the chain. So, a bit of thought should be expected from every user. And I think upsteem is quite self-explaining indeed. Users deal with STEEM here, so if you want to give some credits to the author naturally you would up the steem.

I also disagree about this potential (mis)understanding. The action is in the context of the article, not of the market. So it's pretty clear that when you click that button labelled "Upsteem", the steem associated with that post will go up.

I have to agree with javirid here. Steem/Steemit has such a huge learning curve already - there's not much here that's simple pick up and play and there are a large number of things that can be improved (don't get me wrong - I think this is fantastic!) for easier onboarding.

People understand "upvote" from the outset - I see the value of what you're saying from a branding perspective but when I put my 'new user' hat on, it's another thing I'd need to learn and another "Steem"-related term added into the headspace.

I do not understand your point exactly

right now the word used in the labels for voting a post is "upvote". I proposed to use "upsteem".

Ohhh, now i dig. think it will be cool

I like it!

Good suggestion bud! What will the "votes" at the bottom of the post be called then? "Upsteems"?
Cheers!

I'm indifferent towards it. Your name sounds good for it.

hey its a nice suggestion...the only think that is little contradicting is when we vote we drive away steem from the pool....upsteem sounds as if we are increasing...I might be wrong...lemme know your thoughts

We don't drive away, we drive towards. We drive it towards somebody because we like his / her content. Hence, increasing his / her esteem.

yeah that makes sense to me...thanks for the explanation.

Hmmm........... thinking about this just now, at the end of a very long day, and the end of a very long week (so my logic is probably pretty flawed right now)

we are not up-voting or up-steeming.
The 'vote' does not push the content higher in the list (hot or trending, or my feed etc) and it doesn't add to its 'steemyness'.

What it does do is pay the author. So maybe it should be something like 'tip the author', 'fund this author', 'appreciate this post'

That tells new people exactly what they are doing when they click the button.

Or - upsteeming makes complete sense too :-)

I totally get long days, especially lately, work was piling up. So I understand :)

Sounds pretty good thats a very valid contribution!!!!

RESTEEMED AND "UPSTEEMED" :))

Thanks, appreciate it!

YOU WELCOME thanks for the support.
please upsteem ,follow,resteem

Agree, start using it in personal chat also.

I agree, upsteem makes more sense and will only be associate with Steemit. Upvoting is more general, so referring to it as upsteeming would be an improvement from my point of view.

I called it uplike once on accident and felt like an idiot.

:)) good one. Thanks God Hi5 is not around anymore, otherwise who know how we would have called it...

Upsteemed 😉

I just upsteemed this blog.

Thanks, my self esteem giggled. :)

I think that isn't a small remark at all @dragosroua!
It would make Steemit a lot more special.

interesting point of view, little things like that can have a big impact.
In an interview with the @dollarvigilante @ned said
Steem is short for esteem

I think vote does have some connotations to popularity etc, in the end it should be a reflection if you regard or respect the content...

dictionary http://www.dictionary.com/browse/esteem
**verb (used with object)

  1. to regard highly or favorably; regard with respect or admiration:
I esteem him for his honesty.
  2. to consider as of a certain value or of a certain type; regard:
    I esteem it worthless.
3.Obsolete. to set a value on; appraise.

noun
4.favorable opinion or judgment; respect or regard:
to hold a person in esteem.

  1. Archaic. opinion or judgment; estimation; valuation.**

Yeah i like the change and the first comment steemup rather than upsteem

I need help. I would appreciate it if you could take a look at this and leave a comment with resteem

Upsteemed. Good luck!

Hmm SteemUp, upStreem, Steem is like energy, streem like a blog, meme... All made out of water, energy, all water streams to the ocean, lowest level... except for meme which is molded from a different reality LOL.

i (upsteemt, resteem, and replay)ed.
nice taught

I think upsteem will be better than upvote. Also when compared to other social media where upvote is also common I think it is a plus to let people feel this is a whole new platform not likely to be compared with everything you already know.

This is a really interesting idea especially with linear rewards on the way. More users will actually see their "upsteem" add steem to a post's rewards. It can also help explain the percentage slider used when you "up steem" something. "I would like to upsteem this with 75% of my influence".

Thanks, good call about the slider :)

Not a bad idea actually. I like it and it makes a lot of sense. But I don't think it will make a huge difference either way, but still, sounds good to me.

Great idea. I also think we should change posts to actual posts instead of including comments and replies. It artificially inflates the numbers!

I certainly agree that it will be closer to the brand name and better than upvote.

Love the idea but it might confuse all the newbies lol

I think Steemit is confusing enough.. should we change the Post button to "Steempost" as well?.. I think there is such a thing as overbranding and considering the supposed "rebrand" Q3 as the 2017 roadmap states - perhaps its a little premature? The "Like" button most people understand - "vote" everyone understands.. anything else seems a little ambiguous unless it fits in with the proposed rebranding plans imo.

Your idea is great. But its not only about name! its also about the meaning
So I guess upvote is perfect
Thanks

Great suggestion but i would like steemup rathe than calling it upsteem. Moreove, I agree it can be really handy in promoting and branding the steem

Very interesting proposal should think about this

Well.. one more Steemup for the suggestion @gyanibilli. But Upsteem is easier on the tongue. Oh... wait.. who are we going to say this to? Aren't we typing it... Upsteem ... Steemup... both are easy on the fingers. Guess I'll go with Upsteem. :) Upsteemed!
