In pull request #3418 to Condenser, the software that powers Steemit, Jonathan Porta proposed changes that would allow the owner of a Condenser instance (in the case of Steemit, that would be Steemit Inc.) to insert promoted posts into the trending tab. These posts would have a gray "Promoted" tag beside them. Here's what they'll look like:
These posts behave pretty much the same as the existing "Featured" posts
Presumably, you'd be able to get your post here by paying Steemit Inc. I wonder how much they'll charge for a spot.
What would make sense is to actually have the spot auctioned and people can bid for the spot and the highest bidder gets to remain in the spot for a certain period of time, kind of like what adwords does so we don't always have to see the same thing featured all the time just because they the bidding for it.

Interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing this one. I don't look at condensor changes as such ... so this is quite cool to know that steemit inc is opening up another venue for monetization .. .
