Can't see this happening in practice. When you rely on bots to vote for you, why should other steemians spend their voting power on you? Maybe some people manage to do it, but for me it's against my logic.

Although my information is second hand, actual bot operators I know tell me that this is happening in practise. But, act the way you choose. I think that the comment spam from upvote bots does eventually impede engagement in the comments, but if there's nobody engaging anyway, then there's no loss.
You could argue their SBD is better spend on powering up their accounts and and using their upvotes to get greater engagement.
