A 10 kg Featherwheight E-bike To Get You Around The City

To find a "featherweight" e-bike these days can be a challenging task and it is easy to understand why. The frames is heavy, the big batteries take up space and weigh a lot and that electric motor is not far from bulky too often. Prodrive however managed to design an e-bike from scratch and use only light weight materials naming it Hummingbird.
Using their experience from manufacturing racing components for Aston Martin, Volkswagen and Mini, Prodrive, a company based in UK, managed to not only make the Hummingbird e-bike foldable, but light as a feather also. To begin its description with the frame it is made from carbon fiber while the swing arm is manufactured from a solid aluminum billet.
The seat post is made out of carbon fiber also and titanium hardware to hold it in place saving grams with every part like there's no tomorrow. Now, considering that it has only 10.3 kg it is the lightest from its category of conventional folding e-bikes, but it's still able to sustain a 110 kg rider so no worries if you feel a bit "fluffy".
The 5.20 meter in development bike has a 250 W motor and a 158 Wh Li-ion battery that are perfectly integrated in the bike's design and goal of being the lightest in its category. In the segment of praise and laurels I will mention that the bike has also the highest energy / weight ratio in its class and that the 250 W electric motor is capable of 30 km assisted ride and a top speed at 25 km/h. To turn the engine on you just have to pedal up to 8 km/h and give it three pedals back and it will automatically start running for you.
The battery can be recharged through a connector from the rear wheel axle and it is replaceable after 3,000 cycles as it is guaranteed to last. It charges a bit on brakes also and when on cable it takes three hours to full charge it. For users who wish to track their performances such as speed, the distance and the battery level of the bike it has Bitride app integrated and when the Bitride app is connected the engine turns off automatically.
All these goodies though, such as being pretty fast, the lightest in its class, foldable and having a pretty wide range of colors to choose from come at a price which is not cheap at all. At £4,495.00 ($5,967) can be yours in black while opting for yellow or why not blue or any other color you will have to take out of the pocket an extra £200.
So in conclusion here are its pros and cons in my opinion:
Pros:
- extremely light weight;
- good battery range;
- decent speed for its class;
- classy design;
- high quality materials;
- foldable.
Cons:
- at £4,495.00 ($5,967) it's very expensive.
