my relatives were smoking for years. As far as I understand smoking is like redundant eating or any other bad habit is used to hide, solve (more precisely pseudo solve) some psychological problems (actually the short description for this post ("Cigarettes are food for broken souls.") quite correctly illustrates this idea). As far as I understand what worked in case with my relatives is that they were able to solve those problems so that they won't need anymore that pseudo-solution in the form of cigarettes. Thus I can say for sure that it's possible to quit smoking without any devices/applications... Mass media often show people that smoking is a cool thing to do so I guess what might help to quit also is an adequate understanding of the consequences of smoking on our (and actually surrounding people too) health which could be achieved with a proper education of people.
