Hierarchical Network Design
Chapter 1
Hi! This is my first Education blog and these topics mentioned was recently discussed. Also since I am busy because of this, I want to re-study it more and post it in STEEMPRESS as part of my learning and what I have understood from the topic.
But before that you will be needing these Requirements
- Completed the Course Cisco 1,2 & 3 you may enroll yourself here
- Basic Logic Circuits and Advanced Logic Circuits
- Engineering Mathematics
In this topic, we will be discussing the Network Design and its Overview, and Cisco Enterprise Architecture.
Introduction
This discussion introduces the principles of network design concepts, network models, and network architectures. The introduction will also cover the advantages and disadvantages that are being gathered with the use systematic design approach. Emerging technology trends that affects the network evolution in the future are also discussed. But this is not about arts and architectural stuff, this is about the connections between computers, switches and routers. With the power of technology nothing is impossible of sorting things and arrange the distribution of data each building.
Hierarchical Network Design Overview
Cisco Hierarchical Internetworking Model or its network design is purposely made for enterprises such as big companies. The design module shall be widened and adopt the features for designing a reliable network model, scalable and cost efficient. In the module, we will also explain the access, the distrubution, and the core layers of the model and their functions of the Hierarchical Netowrk Design.
- Access, This provides a work group or a user, to gain access into the network.
Distribution, will provide a policy based connectivity and then controls the boundary between the access and core layers.
Core layers, will be providing a fast transportation between the distribution switches within the enterprise campus.
Cisco Enterprise Architecture
The Cisco Enterprise Architecture is a module to form a network design. In this section, we will be identifying the enterprise architecture modules that are commonly used in a medium to large companies. To serve the required module in our network design, Cisco already developed the Cisco Enterprise Architecture model. The model provides all of the advantages of our hierarchical network design on the campus infrastructure based on our figure below, and this also facilitates a design of much large and more scalable networks. The Module that is built in to the architecture will allow the flexibility in our network design and it also facilitates the implementation and troubleshooting. Take note that this design is not art, but re-engineered for a proper network distribution of data. This is where all datas and connections are being sorted out.
As shown in figure below, is another example of Cisco Enterprise Architecture which is different from an ordinary Hierarchical network technique.
- Enterprise campus
- Enterprise edge
- Service provider edge
- Enterprise branch
- Enterprise teleworker
- Enterprise data center
Notice that the Enterprise campus is connected between a distribution layer to the service provider edge are the remote modules, that includes our Enterprise branch, teleworker and the data center.

Cisco huh? Is it a tough subject?
