The difference between a machine that squirts out little threads of melted plastic, and the kind of technology that can rival a Star Trek Replicator is so vast that is makes an abacus and the worlds most complex supercomputer look like the same technology.
3D printing is enormously over-hyped. A real replicator would have to work at the molecular level. Current 3D printer technology works at a level about 1-2 millions times larger, and can only assemble a shape out of a few materials from a very narrow range of choices. Yeah, but flashy SM is still great!
