Whats the point of public parks in a metropolitan area, specifically in the 20th district in Vienna? What do people do there, why is that important, how is that connected to what we do?

Was ist der Sinn öffentlicher Parks in einer städtischen Struktur, genauer gesagt im 20. wiener Gemeindebezirk? Was machen Menschen dort, warum ist das wichtig und was hat das mit dem zu tun was wir tun?

Well – obviously – it’s a public space, also obvious maybe that its managed by the city of Vienna, the public body elected by the citizens to manage it. Maybe not so obvious however might be the consciousness about the variety of functionalities of this park. Functionalities that both people who live close to it are using, but also those who pass by are using. Did you know, it’s also a classroom, I mean literally a freeking class room? One might say, this park is a brilliant example of a collaborative space. I would claim though, that its value was not harvested until now and not even really encouraged.

Also offensichtlich sind Parks öffentlicher Raum, ebenso offensichtlich scheint, dass diese Flächen von der Stadt Wien betreut werden, jener Institution, die von BürgerInnen gewählt wurden um diese Flächen zu organisieren. Weniger offensichtlich allerdings scheint das Bewußtsein darüber zu sein, welche Vielfalt an Nutzen Parks für Menschen haben können. Wußtet Ihr, dass der Park ein Klassenzimmer ist, ich meine im warsten Sinne des Wortes, ein Klassenzimmer? Man könnte eigentlich noch weiter gehen und behaupten ein Park ist ein brilliantes Beispiel für einen coworking space. Ich würde allerdings behaupten, dass dieser Zweck bisher nicht bedacht wurde.

Taking a closer look: / Genau hingeschaut:

Today we took a closer look at that park. Together with global school participants we mapped the park, to be precise: the Allerheiligenpark in Vienna. We set out to collect information on three lead levels:

1. The people: Who are the people in the park on a Wednesday morning at 11am? What are they doing, what are their thoughts, which languages do they speak, how are they using the park?

2. The park: What does the park offer physically, which equipment, assets, tools, places, which functions?

3. The surrounding: Which entities, shops, initiatives, organizations can be found on the side of the park, basically the frame?

Heute haben wir einen genaueren Blick in den Park geworfen. Gemeinsam mit den global school TeilnehmerInnen haben wir eine Karte vom Park erstellt. Um genau zu sein vom Allerheiligenpark in Wien. Wir haben uns vorgenommen Informationen auf drei Ebenen zu sammeln:

Die Menschen: Wer sind die Menschen im Park an einem Mittwoch vormittag um 11 Uhr? Was machen sie, was denken sie, welche Sprachen sprechen sie, wie nutzen sie den Park?
Der Park: Was bietet der Park an Infrastruktur, welche Ausrüstung, welche Nutzungsgelegenheiten, welche Funktionen?
Die Umgebung: Welche Geschäfte, Initiativen, Organisationen gibt es am Rande, dem Rahmen, des Parks

What did we find? / Was haben wir gefunden?

Well, next to the obvious we also made some non-obvious observations. What we found was a space station. Every walk of live, a multitude of languages, ages, animals (loads of animals). We also found challenges. But first: Who is using the park for which purpose? Well, on Wednesday 11 am there are a significant amount of pupils there, the park a classroom. But they are not just there, they go there with their teacher, they are actually having their subject being taught to them in this park. It was physical education pupils doing exercise there. I am therefore not exaggerating if I claim that at this moment this park was a class room, or gym in this case. This allows us to think about parks from a different perspective. Parks are the extension of a formal learning space. What does that mean? Well, it means that we can think of a different design for objects or infrastructure positioned in this park. It also means that people who use this park should be aware of that.

Also neben den offensichtlichen Beobachtungen, haben wir auch nicht so offensichtliches entdeckt. Was wir entdeckt haben ist eine Art Weltraumstation. Die verschiedensten Lebenslagen, eine Vielzahl an Sprachen, alle Altersgruppen, und ja, Tiere (sehr viele Tiere). Wir haben auch Herausforderungen gefunden.
Aber: Wer nutzt den Park zu welchem Zweck? Was einen Mittwoch vormittag um 11 Uhr angeht, nun da haben wir eine nicht unwesentliche Anzahl an SchülerInnen entdeckt. Aber die waren da nicht zufällig, die waren dort mit deren Lehrer. Die haben dort ihren Unterricht abgehalten, da, in diesem Park. Ich übertreibe also nicht wenn ich sage, dass in diesem Moment der Park ein Klassenzimmer, eine Turnhalle war. Also können wir - wenn wir das wissen - über Parks in einem anderen Zusammenhang nachdenken. Geräte, Installationen etc. sollten dem Rechnung tragen.

So, here we go, to all of us out there, you know now, most certainly a park close to where you live is maybe also a class room. Whatever you do there, will be seen by young people learning about this world. The park therefore is a super beautiful part of the class room. We should develop this. Because – as interviews with the nearby school staff showed – these classes are going to the park regularly. It was not a one time Wednesday 11 o clock coincidence! These students are there on a frequent basis. So parks are not just recreational spaces, or better, they are recreational spaces used for an educative purpose. Why not design our parks entirely that way? We could design spaces that allow for reading, maybe a little bit separated to allow some concentration of ones mind, maybe we create sockets for people to use devices that need electricity, provide strong internet, provide collaborative infrastructure. The question is how can that look like, whats that specifically? Well, that we need to develop.

Also, an uns alle da draussen, wir wissen jetzt, dass aller Wahrscheinlichkeit der Park in Eurer Nähe auch ein Klassenzimmer ist. Was immer Ihr dort macht, bedenkt, dass Ihr von jungen Leuten beobachtet werdet. Parks sind sogar wunderschöne Klassenzimmer. Wir sollten das weiter denken. Weil - so ging es aus den Interviews mit Lehrkräften der angrenzenden Schule hervor - diese Klassen regelmässig Unterricht dort im Park abhalten. Es war keine einmalige Zufallsgeschichte! Diese SchülerInnen sind dort regelmässig.
Parks sind also nicht nur Erholungsgebiete, sie sind sogar Erholungsgebiete mit Bildungsnutzen. Warum also nicht Parks dementsprechend planen? Wir könnten Parks so entwickeln, dass sie zum Lesen und Lernen einladen, vielleicht mit etwas abgeschiedenen Orten, die Fokusierung ermöglichen. Vielleicht Steckdosen für Menschen mit mobilen Endgeräten, starkes Internet, collaborative Infrastruktur allgemein? Die Frage ist, wie das aussehen kann, was ist das genau? Nun, das müssen wir entwickeln.

What are we going to do?

@generationeuropa we will be hosting an info point in that park, we will inform, interact, perform to engage those people who are using this park. We will not only inform about European opportunities for young people, but also inspire ideas, collect ideas and ask people how they would use the park and what kind of items they would like for that. Even though people have organized themselves around the globe in big cities, living in highdensity districts, reducing their living space to the size of a small flat, it does not eliminate the fact that people need space. In this regard a park becomes not only a class room, but also a living room, compensating for the lack of space in ones own flat. Now if a park is not only recreation, but educative and a living room, then it becomes almost a private space. The park is not so public after all, leading to a possible understanding of how some of the challenges of this park come from. If a park is a living room of the people who live close by, well then “strangers” coming will make them apply a certain attitude. Also here, why not make a park more like a living room.

Denn obwohl sich Menschen in großen Gigastädten rund um den Globus organisiert haben, in dicht besiedelten Gebieten wohnen in denen der persönliche Lebensbereich auf die Größe einer kleinen Wohnung beschränkt wird, verändert das nicht das grundsätzliche Bedürfnis des Menschen nach Platz. In diesem Sinne wird der Park nicht nur ein Klassenzimmer, sondern auch die Erweiterung des Wohnzimmers, das Bedürfnis nach mehr Platz erfüllend. Wenn also nun ein Park nicht nur ein öffentlicher Erholungsraum ist, sondern eben auch Klassenzimmer und Wohnzimmer, dann wird er sogar eine Spur privat.
Ein Park ist also letztlich nicht nur öffentlich was uns ein Verständnis dafür geben kann, warum es in Parks zu so manch Konflikt kommt.@generationeuropa wird einen Info- und Interaktionspunkt im Park eröffnen. Wir werden jene, die diesen Park nutzen informieren, einladen, inspirieren. Wir werden aber nicht nur über europäische Chancen für junge Menschen informieren, sondern Ideen sammeln, Menschen fragen wie sie den Park nutzen würden, welche Ausstattung sie gerne hätten.

If you have ideas about parks, if you have seen good examples of spaces and public infrastructure, share them, I would like to think of parks as little islands of recreation, education and most of all collaboration. I am searching for best examples, maybe to be realized here.

Wenn Ihr Ideen über Parks habt, wenn Ihr gute Beispiele von Plätzen und Lösungen im öffentlichen Raum kennt, teilt sie. Ich verstehe Parks als Inseln der Erholung, Bildung und vor allem Zusammenarbeit. I suche Beispiele, wie man das hier umsetzen kann.
