Steemit Iron Chef 2017 #07 : Hot apple sandwitches

in #steemit-ironchef7 years ago (edited)

This week I was visited by food-art muse and I am very proud of how my dish came out to be. I made a very easy desert that my grandma used to make for me when I was little. We had a lot of apples in the garden and white bread was quite cheap back then. The memory I have about the dish is that we had this old style oven that you had to heat up with wood logs, and everything that came out of that oven was delicious, every time it got used I was so very excited.

There are two things that I absolutely love as far as food goes, apples and tomatoes. Tomatoes for summer and apples for winter as there are apples that can survive the winter if they are stored properly. The dish I made today is best eaten warm and smells like Autumn and Winter holidays mixed together, mainly because of the cinnamon that is added for taste and the apples that are so ''Autumn''. I went out in the garden today, and found some peppermint blooming, I think it is the reason why my dish looks so pleasing to my eyes :D

I made 15 baguette sandwiches today and I had to keep myself from eating them all alone, and resorting to growling at people wanting the apple snack. I love the dish! It is a fast plate to make and took only 30 minutes of my time today!

Ingredients

1 baguette or other white bread
6 big apples or more smaller ones
Butter
Cinnamon
2 to 4 tablespoons of sugar
200 g French Cream

First cut your baguette in 1,5 cm thick slices

Depending on how sour your apples are and how much cinnamon you want, mix sugar with cinnamon

Grate your apples

Spread butter on each slice of the bread and put the bread on a baking sheet in the pan

Put your grated apples on the butter spread bread, be generous

Top it with French cream, again, be generous as it will give a creamy taste

Garnish it all with your sugar/cinnamon mixture

Remember to use sugar accordingly to how sour your apples are

It will be a sweet and sour dessert in the end

Put it in the oven for 15 minutes and serve hot. It usually comes out perfectly as it is a desert that is easy to make. I love the taste mixture as it is both, sweet and sour.

I had not made the dish for a long while, but it came out amazing, as a Latvian I always want to add more French Cream to it, so next time at least half of my bread slices will have more of that on top!

As I said, I am very proud of how the finished dish looks and I must admit I wasn't keen on letting my boyfriend eat the sandwiches as the decor looked too sweet (It is a huge leap forward for me from my previous attempts to create beautifully looking dishes.

These are the best dishes, when you can eat them and think of your grandma! What a nice dish! The wood fired oven sounds so cool!

Yeah, it took a long while to heat up, though, but the wait was worth it as my grandma made the best food!

So beautiful!
