The best attitude to have is to expect to make nothing. Have fun. Get engaged. Make friends. If along the way you earn something - bonus!
It is possible to earn thousands of dollars, but most authors who are doing this have put in a lot of time and work to contribute to the community and build followings.
The best way to look at it is that steemit is free to sign up to. Anything that you've earned is something you didn't have before.

All I can say is put in the effort. The post I put the most effort into paid out just shy of $300
but what should i do for it buddy???
Find a topic that interests you. One you can really go into detail with. Or if you want to push yourself you can always research a new topic that you want to learn and put this information into a post. Putting everything you've researched into a post is also a good way of improving your own knowledge.
