On August 25th Conor Mcgregor is set to face off against Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas. The fight puts a mixed martial artist against a boxer and creates a final competition that will test the question of whether mixed martial arts is superior or boxing. Conor is the current lightweight U.F.C. champion and former featherweight champion. He is at his peak so to say in the sport. Not only is he a champion but his trash talking as made him popular as well. He is the biggest pay-per-view draw in MMA history. Floyd Mayweather has won multiple titles in his career in boxing and he retired after his last fight. He has a record of 49 wins and 0 loses. Like Mcgregor, Mayweather is the biggest draw in pay-per-view boxing. At first this fight seems like it will be one of the greatest fights ever, but this logic comes from the normalization of mixed martial arts in current popular culture. The reality this is a exhibition match and it's been done before. The most obvious example would be the Muhammad Alli Vs. Antonio Inoki match in 1976. Alli the boxer and Inoki the wrestler/mixed martial artist. The fighter ended up being a draw, stupid rules were made for the match and Inoki ended up kicking Alli the whole fight while in a ground position. The fight showed that unless the fight was full contact and with few rules, like the first few UFCs, than the fight could not work. In reality the fight was a publicity stunt. More than 40 years later there trying to pull off another publicity stunt. In the fight Mcgregor will have to fight using boxing rules which is to the advantage of Mayweather. The fight then is a fraud it doesn't truly test the strength of both martial arts. So what these promoters are selling is a scam. In the end of the day no matter what the result both fighters will get a huge payoff and the boxing and mixed martial art promoters will get wealthier. Mayweather is no stranger to controversy in this field. Although he is undefeated in closer look we see that most of Mayweather's later fights have been largely orchestrated by him. In other words Mayweather only fights if the other fighter meets his conditions. Mayweather only fights on his own terms which basically always gives him the advantage. That's not to say that Mayweather isn't a great fighter, he is, in fact he's consider the greatest boxer in past 25 years. Which brings us to Mayweather's age. He's 40 years old and Mcgregor is 28. This should be Mcgregor's advantage in the fight but then again Mcgregor is not champion boxer he's a champion mixed martial artist. The age is part of the show old man boxer fights young popular mixed martial artist. There's little doubt Mcgregor would knock out Mayweather in a MMA fight but has a boxer? So the fight is a scam a way for Mayweather to stroke his ego had winning 50 fights and his last against a mixed martial artist although with boxing rules. Maybe Mayweather should of asked John Cena to fight the result would have been the same. Underneath all the promotion theres another factor, ethno-politics. Just like in a boxing match between a black man and a hispanic man, people choose sides and the promoters know how to exploit it. Boxing has largely become a minority's sport. MMA on the other hand was dominated by white men until recently and is now largely mixed sport. Conor Mcgregor isn't just popular because of his trash talk, he's popular because he's white. Conor Mcgregor could be hyped into being the great white hope. The current polarization in American politics will only fuel this narrative. This exploitation is actually brilliant. One of the last fights Mayweather fought was against Manny Pacqiaou. That fight was considered disappointing and boring with Mayweather in the defensive the whole night and Pacqiaou supposedly fighting with a previous arm injury. Most viewers saw the fight as a scam to make money. Mcgregor Vs. Mayweather could be the same thing.

Yeah it is a scam to make money but it's what the fans want. They want to prove boxing is no match for mma.
Of course, getting an mma fighter in the boxing ring to fight under boxing rules is going to end up a farce.
It will be fun to watch though.
Thanks for the story but they're both rich enough already. A fight will happen and even if it ends up being like wrestling, it's entertainment.

I agree it's still might be fun to watch.
Finally, we have a fight! Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor superfight... and I believe it's not scam!
Well this is sports entertainment, right? Sadly, people who talk the most smack get the fat paydays in the fight game these days. This is no doubt a circus fight, a scam would be a fixed fight.
Beautiful post
