I must WARN this is not your regular Facebook Post, this is a blog of my introduction to Steemit. Ok, let’s get right into this new blog.
Today we are going to talk about this new social network site called Steemit. I am pretty sure I’ve mentioned it to you in a recent conversation we’ve had or in a post on one of the social network platforms that I use. I probably didn’t give you much information on it either other than it’s on a blockchain network called STEEM. I probably mentioned that it is being compared to the social media giant Facebook but more of a blogging site in which you control what content you want to see and post. I also probably mentioned that you can get paid for the content you contribute to the social network site.
Not much information I shared at the time but that is what I knew of the social network site. So to be better informed, I needed to find out more and do more research. What peaked my interest was not the fact that people were earning money, and some good money too, but that this was new and already being compared to Facebook. So what I did next was google Steemit, clicked on the first link that showed up in the results and started my research. If I have peaked your interest already into this social network site click on the Steemit links in this blog post. https://steemit.com/
The first thing that showed after clicking the link was the website's front page with a catchy headline that say’s “Your Voice is worth something”. I started browsing the front page before clicking on the link that say's "Learn More”. It was very tempting to just click on the link that say’s "Sign up" but if you know me, I like to know what I am getting myself into before jumping the gun.
I thought I was going to be brought to a page where there were videos explaining what Steemit is but I was brought to the FAQ’s page of Steemit. Now I must admit this is a pretty well laid out page, it explains everything you need to learn about Steemit, the platform it uses, the community, the economics within the platform, etc. I recommend taking a good look at this page before signing up for an account. Sure it maybe a lot of information to review but you will learn a lot about the community you are joining, the social network platform it is based on and how you can contribute to the environment you are joining. Here is a link to FAQ’s page. https://steemit.com/faq.html
Ok I know that was a lot of information to take in, especially if this whole blockchain technology is a new thing for you. The thing that stood out like a sore thumb was the part of keeping your password/owner key secure. It is very important that you keep this password in a secure place, please have a hard copy written down and stored away.
What also stood out was, you cannot change your username unless you are willing to pay to create a new account using a third-party account creation service. There are recommended services in the FAQ’s page but I would just pick a username and stick with that. If you are able to see in the picture above, your account also cannot be deleted or deactivated. Your account and all of its activity is permanently stored in the blockchain.
As mentioned earlier, Steemit members are part of the STEEM platform. While there is no official rules to participate, @thecryptofiend one of the members has created an Etiquette Guide that I recommend reading. I know, I know more reading but this just gives you a better understanding of what is being built here and how to better participate. Please do your due-diligence before joining any social network on the internet so you are better informed. This Steemit platform is in Beta form so getting to know as much of it as possible before joining I believe is completely beneficial not only for you but everyone else involved.
If reading all of this information hasn’t curbed you from creating an account I would recommend taking a look at the photo above, it gives a brief overview of your account information. I am not going to cover the whole Steemit FAQ’s page in this post I’ll leave that up to you. If I have peaked your interest and you decide to join this new Social Network, please follow me, upvote and comment on my posts and I’ll be sure to do the same. I look forward to seeing your posts, comments, contributions and so forth.
