upvoting your own comments feels always a bit sad to be honest.
I only do it if I feel it's important to highlight eg. in scam/content theft posts

Don't feel that way. Your not gaming the system. It's just the way the system works. You will purposely put yourself at an unfair disadvantage when the system is meant for to be used this way, and most will. I definitely would not recommend frivolous comments just to up vote yourself,....(.one won't get very far with that scammy type of practice)..... But thoughtful comments should be up voted, at least by yourself. Remember this helps others see your comment
no shame here. all about earning steemssss. :)
that's not how it works
Are you sure about that. That is exactly what I thought before doing some research last night. That is why I want to let was many people know. I don't want anyone to be disadvantaged. It does feel self serving I agree, but it is not. It's just the way the system works. Think of it as certifying your post. The effect is miniscule and believe me, you are not gaming the system. I would never encourage that. I've been a big fan of Dan and Stan Larimer and and their work I since the early days of Bitshares. Only doing the little I can to help the platform as there are not a lot of clear instructions at this point in development.
I meant that's not how you should use it.
on a technical level you're right
There is a good thread on the topic here. There is a benefit to upvoting your comments (not your posts) that someone pointed out, which is that it helps put it higher in the order of other comments. If you feel that your comment has a lot of value to the post and should be seen, then it doesn't seem super selfish to try and get it higher.
Upvoting your own posts is a little different though. The only purpose of that is to make more SP/SBD for yourself.
