The rooster actually crows because it has a sense of time in the body or just a response to stimulate external stimuli ?

Previous studies have shown that a myriad of animal behavior is generally driven by an internal clock in its body that recognizes time. Suppose that at night, some animals dip themselves in swamps or puddles, even the fish in the cave use circadian clocks to tell time.

"The sound of a rooster crowing is a symbol or a sign that the dawn has arrived, many people in different countries believe it, but this research has not been clear enough to prove that the rooster actually crows because it has a sense of time in the body or just a response to stimulate external stimuli" Takashi Yoshimura from Nagoya University.

Because all-day stimulation, such as lighting a car's headlights, will trigger a rooster to crow every time. It is also suspected to be the reason why the rooster continues to crow because of the light that leads to the rooster.

To find out, Yoshimura and his colleagues conducted research and placed 40 roosters in a constant-light setting, then recorded as they crowed.

Sure enough, in fact the rooster crows not only at dawn. Rooster also crows because it responds to light and as a way to communicate with other chickens, but their crowing behavior is much stronger at dawn. As a follow up, the team hopes to determine the genetic basis of the sound of other animals.

Ayam jantan sesungguhnya memang berkokok karena memiliki kepekaan waktu dalam tubuhnya atau hanya respon untuk menstimulasi rangsangan eksternalnya ?

Studi sebelumnya telah menunjukkan bahwa segudang perilaku hewan pada umumnya didorong oleh jam internal dalam tubuhnya yang mengenali waktu. Misalkan pada malam hari, beberapa hewan menyelupkan diri mereka di rawa atau kubangan air, bahkan ikan-ikan di dalam gua menggunakan jam sirkadian untuk memberitahu waktu.

"Suara ayam berkokok merupakan simbol atau pertanda bahwa waktu fajar telah tiba. Banyak orang di berbagai Negara percaya itu, namun penelitian ini belum cukup jelas membuktikan bahwa ayam jantan sesungguhnya memang berkokok karena memiliki kepekaan waktu dalam tubuhnya atau hanya respon untuk menstimulasi rangsangan eksternalnya" kata Takashi Yoshimura dari Nagoya University.

Karena rangsangan sepanjang hari, seperti menyalanya lampu mobil, akan memicu ayam jantan untuk berkokok setiap saat. Hal ini juga diduga menjadi alasan mengapa ayam jantan terus berkokok karena adanya cahaya yang mengarah pada ayam jantan.

Untuk mengetahuinya, Yoshimura dan rekan-rekan melakukan penelitian dan menempatkan 40 ayam jantan dalam pengaturan dengan cahaya konstan, kemudian direkam ketika mereka berkokok.

Benar saja, nyatanya ayam berkokok tidak hanya saat fajar. Ayam jantan juga berkokok karena merespon cahaya dan sebagai cara berkomunikasi sesama ayam, tetapi perilaku berkokok mereka memang jauh lebih kuat saat fajar. Sebagai tindak lanjut, tim berharap untuk menentukan dasar-dasar genetik dari suara binatang lainnya.
