How to disable notifications on steemit [+suggestions for improvements]

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

The Steemit notification system is nice, but still needs a little work.

In its current form it was only a matter of time before somebody abused the @username mention notifications , and today was the day apparently.

Until we have some more control over filtering these notifications it seems like it'd be useful to make sure everyone knows how to turn them on and off.

Here's how it's done in Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome :

In Mozilla Firefox

To disable notifications - First click the padlock in your address bar

And then simply click the X to disable!

To re-enable - right click a page background and select "Page Info"

Under "Receive Notifications" , untick "Use Default" and tick "Allow"

In Google Chrome

Just click the padlock in the address bar

Then allow/block via the notifications dropdown menu

So what can we do about this ?

Having to disable a useful feature because one particular douche user is having a tantrum obviously isn't ideal.

We could fix this a few different ways :

  • Make the notification setting respect the "mute" so you can simply mute people that annoy you (simplest)
  • Add a minimum reputation level before someone can mass-notify users that don't follow them back (smarter)
  • Add a settings page to allow/disallow specific notification types, with a user blacklist/whitelist (best)

Any of these would stop the problem immediately.

Do you have a better idea ? Let me know in the comments!

Lets connect !
steemit / twitter / gab.ai / keybase

Update: I almost forgot - if you still want notifications and you use steemit.chat , checkout steemwatch.com - it lets you set very specific filters and get notifications as chat messages instead ;)

Update 2: The steemit dev team is working on a fix now - from @val in the comments :

Don't disable notifications right now - the Steemit team is working on disabling notifications from accounts with negative or low reputation.

This should be pretty effective at immediately stopping 99% of the mention spam with no user input required - thanks guys! And also thanks for the support everyone, this is my second trending post in a few days - I'm on a roll and the extra funds couldn't have come at a better time :)

Update 3: Fix is enabled, all sorted thanks devs :)

Sort:

Don't disable notifications right now - the Steemit team is working on disabling notifications from accounts with negative or low reputation.

Great to hear! Will you post something somewhere when that's set up so we can re-enable our notifications? Yesterday was way too spammy for me to leave my notifications on.

Perfect that'll do the trick :) Will update the post

My husband and I got woken up a couple of times due to that stupid prankster Steemit member who kept at it over and over.
Thanks for sharing this info.

I've turned them off for now as I was getting too many. I tried them on my phone, but they duplicated those I'd seen on the PC and were a pain to clear. We need the option to say 'don't show me this one again'

Lol yeah android chrome notifications drilled my phone once I turned wifi on. Don't have the phone on me right now to make that part of the guide, but I think you can disable notifications by long-pressing on the message in android for more options.

Will check and add that section later, unless someone else wants to do it :P

You're right - in Android all's working as you said. Thanks!

I have to turn off too.. Sadly.. I really wish there's a way to filter out tags made by some specific users(spammers).

The browser notificatifications has been really helpful

I know, it's a real shame to have to remove because of this.

I'm back to what I was using before the feature was added - steemwatch.com (get your notifications via steemit.chat , with filtering)

Thanks for the info...as a non tech savvy, tips like these are always great.

No worries at all , I figured there would be a few people wondering about this :)

I actually normally use steemwatch.com as I can follow other things that interest me, like when certain authors post (dan or steemitblog for example) and when my comments get votes. I love that there's so much we can do with so many different apps available.

Yeah same here, I stalk heaps of people using it - super handy tool that more people should know about :)

I was feeling popular for once :'(
Now devs are gonna fix that.

Lol I can spam your name occasionally if you want ? :P

I'd love you if you did on the top of every blog post you write from now on...

Free advertisement for my awesome blog!
You seem quite popular, maybe it's time to follow you.

Great thanks , im going to to just that now , thanks for the informative article much appreciated :D

Wow, that is very useful! For me, they weren't turned on, so I'm going to try that for a while. Great to see how easy it is to turn on and off.

Thanks for the informations!

We were just talking about how someone could easily use it to Spam. This is typical growing pains, the team will figure it out.

Aha it had to happen eventually , at first I was going to ignore it but it's a pretty effective spam attack that's bound to be driving new users crazy if they don't know how to stop it. Live and learn, we'll end up with a better system now because of this :)

Very Helpful, Thank you for the information.

This is great, we all try to contribute to make steemit better. I feel I am part of this company working, if I can call it work. Lol

Nailed it, we're (almost) all trying to improve this beasty so it's a better experience for everybody :)
Best job ever

Thanks for the tip! Just as I opened my browser today i was flooded with what I think was a deluge of flags from strange accounts...

There shouldn't be any notifications from flagging specifically, it's just a guy with a heap of accounts throwing a tantrum and listing every account in his posts so everyone gets notified.. Over and over and over.

Should be fixed shortly anyways :)

Thanks, they are irritating as hell!

I must have had them turned off from the get go, because I had no idea notifications were even a thing yet! Very cool.
I've added your post in our notes for the podcast discussion this weekend, time permitting. ;-)

Cheers, I actually hadn't spotted your podcast yet - following now :)

Solution? Steemit could limit the rate of notification of people with no reputation and send them one by one until enough people flag the person enough to cancel sending the remaining notification.

Thank you for the information!

a very good article
thank's for @ausbitbank

When I leave a reply on myself I also receive a notification :p

Awesome post! Just what I was looking for. Thanks!! 😁
