TODAY: What is a Private Key?
First AND MOST IMPORTANT BESIDES PROPER BACK UPS/INFO: You should NEVER share your private key with anyone else and you should never store your private key online.
I repeat .......... You should NEVER share your private key with anyone else and you should never store your private key online.
The private key is crucial to keeping your coins /account safe.
It's the counterpart to your public key that you use publicly and is expressed at times as a wallet address. This is unique to you and only you should know/have access to your private key. It's an alphanumeric string that signs a digital communication once hashed with your public key.
You can dig deeper into the technical stuff here: https://blog.wetrust.io/why-do-i-need-a-public-and-private-key-on-the-blockchain-c2ea74a69e76
Another way that a private key is expressed is referred to as the recovery seed, a twelve to twenty four word phrase that allows you access your coins through any wallet or device.
Keep an eye on your Crypto and Security!!!!
Steemit has a slightly different key system but the basics are THE SAME!
Let’s say you have lost your your hardware wallet or your current wallet provider does not support a coin held by your address, but you have responsibly kept your backup seed phrase to restore the wallet. You'll find the recovery wallet option of the third party service you are using and the seed will allow access after entering the random words from your seed, the interface may ask for a password or pin and your new device/wallet should show your funds.
Recent Past Steemit 101 / Steemit101/ (#Steemit101) Resources...
Today I am sharing some tips I gave to a Minnow on one of my posts who asked for some advice.
TLDR: Make GOOD COMMENTS that are RELATIVE to the post you are commenting on.
... here's part of that convo from my blog unedited but cleaned up:
Any tips or tricks for a minnow?

... but you seem to usually make pretty decent comments relating to the posts you take time on, keep that up.
That is one of the big lessons to learn and practice early on...... many fail here and people READ the comments on their blogs looking for this.
Trust me.
Even go thru 5 of my blogs, pick any 5. I cannot get here as much anymore for replies and curation but when I do, look at the votes I give, to whom and who I reply to.
And most Sr. Steemians do the same.
........Case in point, there is an UV and a decent reply to you right here today LOL

We had that talk on my post HERE
Steemit 101 Balance of Resources/Template:
Keeping my word to continue to share / re-share Steemit 101 type things because I had help when I was new, and we have new users daily who are lost like we were when we were new!
Hoping my regular Steemit 101 / Crypto 101 type posts continue to help all the new people coming daily.
It may not help YOU if you have been here weeks or months, but I always remember some people have been here hours, or days, and they need the resources like we did, when we were new.
Everyone will be new at some point, we should help one another how we can. That is what community is about.
Today: SteemD.com
Attached just below are screenshots of the page / resource today:
-- at SteemD.com -- it is a Live Tracker connected directly to the blockchain for Steemit where you can check tons of stats, yours and the general platform stats. This link / resource tonite is pretty comprehensive. There are a LOT of line items you can use here and check.
Your stats for YOUR page are easily searchable there too. It is really really good and a resource that stays current and directly linked to the Steem blockchain.
The UPDATED version you will see below, from ~July 19th or so, 2017 when they updated the site, has those changes we just discussed.
Other sites and resources are available and like them --- you can see all the users, see the top / trending Steemit categories and whales, payouts for posts, all kinds of useful stuff.
Give it a Try & Bookmark It Today To Help You Friends!
--
Some sites that were always up, have gone down - some for good I think.... some for days or hours.... then some new ones have popped up also, we will cover them one by one.
Stay tuned here!!
We have to keep things simple here LOL.
If you do not like this resource I will give you your money back you spent on this post reading it LOL
(:
Here is the Site Link: Bookmark and Share w. Others
Stick your @username there at the end for YOUR page. The SteemD.com link without it shows all current PLATFORM activity and stats. Both are useful, believe me!!!! (like this -- https://steemd.com/@barrydutton)
Now be advised, these are older screenshots above and below but the pages are laid out the same.
I edited and made many months ago, for the Steemit101 series, but the essence of everything you need to know has not changed in that nothing is missing -
- the new SteemD.com is a little cleaner, with some extra features -- here is a quick screenshot of my page and then a screenie I made a few mths ago, when the changes came out, you can see that:
Notes:
Point 1- Use this url / domain to track ALL your up to date account info on the Blockchain.
--
-- I just leave it up on a tab most of the time. Easy way to remember the url / domain name is it basically matches your Steemit.com/yourname address, -- you just swap out the "it" and insert a "d" -- and really, it shows you what has BEEN Steemed... not what may be steemed! (:
2 easy ways to remember this resource, that I did when I found it as a new Steemer.
--
Points 2/3/4 - Live / Up to date Trackers of all your key stats ie -
--
-- Post Counts, Voting Power, All your STEEM currency + Awards etc. and more -- ALL your activity on the Blockchain in one place!
Barry, Why Do You Keep Sharing Steemit 101 Resources??
I hope to continue to help people here. I really do maintain a Minnow Mindset.
There's new people arriving daily -- I've always been highly aware of this.
I know what it feels like to be new, overlooked, or forgotten about. I say it often to remind people I do care -- and do relate and remember.
We can do more together. That is my philosophy.
Resharing this one..... This is a KEY everyday thing to understand in the markets. So many new people coming daily and posts often also miss people in other timezones..... 2 things I try and remember, to help people and be aware of, thanks.

Please note -- I will have limited internet access for awhile -- so PLEASE do not be upset that I cannot reply right away, or to everyone. I am dealing with some changes, and will have limited time online and will be happy if I get a few blog posts up a week.
This has really upset some people but I do not force my opinions on others, or need to communicate every detail of my life or issues, most people do not care anyways. I invested around 10 hours or more a day on Steemit most of my first 13 mths here, I just do not have that time in my life right now, and that includes for replies and voting/curation.
I have done my best, sorry if you do not understand like some are clearly having a problem with. It's a blogging platform, and I will do my best at everything, and to keep blogging.
Carry On.

What are your thoughts on the Steem Plus Chrome Extension? I just started using it and had to enter my active key. Just want to make sure this is safe...
Haven't used it.
Also, where can I buy one of those "will blog for crypto" shirts?
It was sent to me, I was in a contest afterwards connected to it and some more went out
Great work as always Mr. Dutton, thank you for your contributions!
Thanks!
I muddle along eh?

Thank you for this great contribution to help grow our steemit society. I wish I had someone like you to have posted this when I joined steemit. This is really incisive.
