Bandwidth, Voting Power (Steem Power) and how you effect them!

in #steemit7 years ago

I have been using Steemit now for a week and have learned a lot fast! One of the big things I have noticed is that every time your Voting Power decreases, you seriously effect your available bandwidth. Investing into Steem Power directly helps boost your over all effect when voting, but also helps your available bandwidth limit.

Why Bandwidth Matters?

Bandwidth is how much "data" you are able to store in the blockchain. Everytime you post, comment or do almost anything with Steemit you are consuming bandwidth. Many new users are even running into the issue of not having enough bandwidth to even create a single post! Bandwidth is just as important to conserve as your voting power!

Voting Power vs. Steem Power

We all know Steem Power directly increases the value our voting has. What is less clear is how each time you place a vote, your voting power decreases, causing each subsequent vote to be worth less and less. Steemit recharges your voting power by 20% a day, but if you are at 20% or less right now you might want to take a week off! Voting when you have less than 20% Voting Power causes your votes to be worth less than someone with 1/5th the Steem Power who has 100% Voting Power! You are in some effect throwing your votes away by over voting past your Voting Power, regardless of your Steem Power.

Steem Power? Should I Power Up?

Every STEEM you invest into Powering Up increases your effect here on Steemit. Your votes matter more, your bandwidth increases and your reputation score increases far faster than if you just want to get all your STEEM out asap! I personally take 100% of my rewards in the form of Power Ups since they help boost my overall reach and effect on the social platform, which is far more valuable long term than a few extra STEEMs!

Hope this helps a few people! If so please feel free to follow me, join my facebook group, comment below, up vote and best of all resteem!

Very insightful post thanks for adding to this! Followed you!

I don't post a lot but already hit the bandwidth limit, that I didn't know about.

It is very serious issue! Take a look at this post you should seriously consider buying some Steem Power now while it is cheap! https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@bigdeej/why-purchasing-steem-power-and-steem-dollars-matters-beginners-guide

Thank you, will do. Nice channel you got there. I'm following.

Glad to have a fellow steemian aboard!

For only being on Steemit a week you've learned quite fast! Welcome to the community. May we all rise up together :D.

Thanks I'll be sure to follow you! I'm not a crypto n00b and I read A LOT! I'v already invested over $2k into STEEM/STEEM Power and have observed first hand how things work here! I love the idea of a decentralized, ZERO Censorship platform that is block chain backed verified for every last post, edit, comment and more! It is like nothing that ever existed before!

You picked a great time to invest. I bought the small amount I have when it was over $2. You pretty much got 50% off haha. Yeah it's an exciting idea. Hopefully it catches on and the content still stays rich. It still needs a few tweaks here and there but it seems to be improving everyday.

Yeah I saw that actually was why I bought in so much and just threw it into steem power! Realized how this works and was like I'm long STEEM for at least 12 months lets see how this works when you actually have influence on the platform!

Learnt something today. I didn't even encounter bandwidth until yesterday when I ran out of bandwidth to even post. I guess that completed my initiation rites into the community. I'm just a few days in, like you. And like you, I'm converting all my earnings to SP. I see a bright future for Steemit beyond a few cents here and there 😎

Yes the best thing you can do is learn to make valuable up votes and control manage your levels. Usehttps://steemd.com/ it will help you! Add your username in and track yourself!

Thank you @bigdeej that is super informative. I'm new to steemit, so these posts really help me a lot to understand the ins and outs of what's going on :) I was wondering what the bandwidth meant when It was popping up

Glad to be able to help! Resteem and follow me! I followed you already! Glad to have you aboard this ship!

Wow this is very helpful. I was thinking how Steem filters toxic spammer. This is the good solution when they set a limit with bandwith.

Yes there is a lot they do to control spam. Take a look at this article as well if you are just starting out you will want to invest in some Steem Power! https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@bigdeej/why-purchasing-steem-power-and-steem-dollars-matters-beginners-guide

Thanks for the info! Looking forward to more posts from you. Check out my blog and follow if you're interested.

Followed! Resteem if you find useful! I'll be sure to track you as well!!

Been doing 100% as well, but just started out. Seemed that was the best way to compound.

Yes and now is a good time to Power Up since STEEM is cheap! Thanks for joining!

Why are so much restrictions of bandwidth????

I think these limitations are degrading Steemit.

Instead of bandwidth limit, we can Decrease their steem power and after the certain limit their votes are of no use. But they can comment as usual. It will help Steemit to grow in a faster manner.

Comments are welcome so that we can interact on this problem and will find some solution.....

It is to prevent spamming from new accounts primarily. I do agree it can be restrictive but I encourage you read this and Power up now while it is cheap! https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@bigdeej/why-purchasing-steem-power-and-steem-dollars-matters-beginners-guide

Great For This

Thanks for the info

Welcome to steemit !! Enjoy this beautiful world! Followed. Follow me back 😘

As soon as I understood what Steem power was, I adopted the pattern of reinvesting into myself. It just made sense!

Good plan! I have all my posts at 100% power up and am taking any additional cash I don't need and buying up as much as possible! Happy Steeming!

Great! but i have confusion. Not really a confusion but a question that how much up votes is suitable to be done per day?? or take it this way, a single up vote has how much value of steem power?? i mean if i upvote someone and i have 70% steempower than how much will decrease come in my steem power...

Each vote costs 2% of your steem power. Once you have the VP slider you can use less than the full amount on each post/comment you up vote! Take a look through @shadowbot for more useful information!

I have a few more tips for those, who have low bandwidht because they're new at SteemIt, or just want to save bandwidth:

  • Always write your posts in an external text editor, like the Basic Windows ,,Editor" or on your Phone, the Note App. Or use an Markdown Editor, so you also have a Preview, how it'd approximately look like on SteemIt. If you write your Posts and/or Comments directly on SteemIt, it'd constantly drain ALL of your Bandwidth just to Save the draft after any single word, and so you have to wait a long time, again, and that's NO GOOD!
  • Try to find an alternate Solution instead of SteemIt Images, like an 3rd Party Website for uploading Images, or your own unlisted Website, if you're already registered at a Website Maker Site, better with an separate sub-site for each individual image. If you use SteemIt Images, it costs you much Bandwidth, and Images are not exactly the smallest files, especially Videos.
  • Shedule your Interactions in an Document. You can also Shedule Comments. Just Paste the URL of the Article you wanna reply later and type your Comment for later, in the Document. If you want to vote there, you can shedule it, too. After you done one Action on SteemIt, you should wait some time before doing the next. So you should shedule ANY Interaction on SteemIt.

I agree with writing your posts in an editor only because I have lost posts that I worked hard on after the browser glitched of steemit had an issue, so good call but for the wrong reason (if I am wrong please show me this would be very interesting). I BELIEVE (again if I am wrong please let me know), that your browser is using either a cookie or local storage to actually keep the post draft, not publishing it as you write it to the blockchain.

Agreed! We are working on an all onblockchain solution for this actually with @shadowbot!

Scheduling is a big thing and something we are working to automate with a few tools ;)

Great tips over all I agree!

Thanks for the information. i was so upset about why i am getting this bandwidth issue everytime i try to post on @sumaanraina. But now i understand the whole concept.

Glad it could help! Take a look through my posts as well as @shadowbot and consider joining us! We are a great community that work together to learn and earn more!
