Why will having a Niche on Steemit help your performance here and what do I mean by that??
Having a niche is to have a constant topic of interest you blog about. This will start to create an association with you and the topic here on Steemit. You are branding yourself around this subject and the more blogs you continue to post on your niche, the more others will see you associated with the topic. Making yourself experienced in this matter of subject here seen on Steemit and in general as you continue to learn more.
As time goes on and the platform grows with many more users, each topic of interest will continue to grow. Now when new users are searching up the topic you are majorly involved in, you will be found as you will have many posts on the related subject and will be noticed as a topic provider in the area of interest.
If you are a major contributor in a specific topic as the platform grows into millions of users, you will be doing very well in your Niche area! In my opinion of course... but I do not see why you wouldn't be. This doesn't mean you have to make a profile directly associated only with your Niche but maybe that will be better for you? I think you can just do segments and have various topics you blog about.
I believe this is a great strategy and I already am implementing a few Niches of my own and have a few in the works!
Even with a niche, the problem is discovery. It is still difficult for people to find your content.
Can't agree more. We need some features in steemit that help to discover hidden gems. Trending is doing some of the jobs, however, a good search algorithm along with intuitive user interface might help in future. Steemit recently have hired a new UI expert.
Trending only rewards high reputation, old investor class steemians that write about the same topics over and over again and are voted up by other whales.
It has yet to really empower the long tail and minnows.
As the platform grows, there will be continued growth in all topics, with users searching topics more then seeing the new blogs available currently.
Do people really search?
How often do you search in Reddit? Or Twitter? Facebook?
If steemit is after Reddit, than it needs to surface more content from more people and broader topics. Maybe allow more churn on trending pages, Customizable trending pages, or saved combinations of topics.
Yes I have searched here many times. It is very helpful for looking for specific topics here. This is just a year old and in beta version still. Things can't come together perfectly immediately. How where those platforms doing after 12 months?

In any business not only in steemit, you'll get to the top with a real niche. ;)
Thanks for information
