How's The Circle Jerk Going

in #steemit6 years ago

Thought I would check-in on the crypto-bro "Steemed" sausage party and circle jerk. How is it going? Moon yet? Mass adoption on the horizon? New tokens for everyone? Ok, yeah, that was overly sarcastic, even for me. I am really just checking in like I do on Google Plus to see who is hanging in there. I may not be a hopeless optimist like other Steemians, but I do like to be around them especially when it comes to wished-for cultural changes the platform is supposed to usher in. Cultural history is my geekish hobby/part-time career, and Steemit is a great place to people watch as they discuss the future and cultural change that is supposed to happen due to the blockchain and tokens, at least according to Steemit evangelists.

In my six months here (feels like years) I have noticed patterns and can say with confidence that active Steemians fit into a couple of groups which, in my humble opinion, will kill off the platform:

The first group is made up of white, Libertarian, crypto-bros who have an affinity for beards, Ron Paul, bacon flavored craft beer, and the idea of a tough mudder competition if they didn't involve mud and if you received tokens at the finish line. Of course there are exceptions to this group, namely males from outside the US who may not be able to consume pork products or beer, but who are jerking off to Brexit or whatever version of nationalism their country is currently battling over, and of course crypto/blockchains also get them moist. Same bro, different country, so for the sake of space I will just call them Incels. Yep, Incels. The never gonna touch a boobie bunch, at least not for long because the last thing a woman wants is a man who drags her to every craft beer pub to watch tough mudder competitions on TV, has an unfashionable itchy beard (sorry straight guys, beards are only barely fashionable in the gay daddy community now) and goes on and on about blockchain, Libertarianism/Brexit, and where Steemit fits in. Women who won't stick around for long hate all the above and bitch to their gay friends about. God, do they bitch about the "bro" culture to us. Get with it, bros, because I do not want to hear their complaining about you as they say all the good guys are gay, taken, and/or liberals without beards, craft beer breath, and blockchain on the brain. But I digress. This a small percentage of the population and if they make up the majority of Steem and posts, as they do now, it won't go any further no matter how many thousands of new tokens you throw at it.

The second kind of Steemian, the smallest group, is made up of people who do not care about the workings of blockchain, just want to socialize and share, and maybe make a few dollars. I doubt they will be around much longer. It is a pity, but that is how social media and culture works - what is new, exciting, innovative and fashionable one minute disappears in the blink of an eye because the unfashionable settle in and take over. I believe that has already happened, killing the dream of mass adoption and the moon.

Ok, go back to the circle-jerk now that I pissed everybody off. I will check-in again later.

Sort:

You forgot the group that is in the middle of the circle waiting to get splashed ....

LOL - They are included in the next post

I'm sure while you did not describe me, I fit in there somewhere. I'm the one RAOFLMAO at your post. Well conceived my friend! p.s. You forgot to mention the ogliarchy. (And I gave you my UV early because I don't give a rats ass any more).

Thank you! I don't fit neatly into the groups either. More of the "I keep circling around a car accident in order to see if I missed anything" type.

I came to Steemit with high expectations and everything started off smooth. I did some writing, had a little success, invested my own money, and a bully stepped in... all 6 of him! Needless to say it soured me worse than allum and vinegar could! I'm mostly on the sidelines now but am actually making more trading Steem on the open market. As the price of Steem fluctuates downward, I keep trading at the peaks and dips. It's more entertaining than watching good people get flagged for no reason.

That is one of the many downsides of Steemit. It is sold as an uncensored social media - what are people posting that gets removed elsewhere besides vile hate speech and being bullies - and the opportunity to make money. On Steemit the bullies can take away your money and censor what they do not like. That is not an improvement - only putting the prison in the hands of the inmates. Big fail.
I am doing the same as you with Steem - trading instead of earning. It makes more sense and is way more profitable than waiting on the moon. I am glad they are waiting though - it makes me money.

Well said - "Inmates in charge of the prison." BTW, what part of the south do you hail from? Just followed.

Originally from west Georgia but lived/live all over the state now. I prefer the coastal areas but the humidity is getting to me the older I get.

Lived in North MS for nearly 20 years before retiring in favor of even more heat and humidity in the Philippines! 🤨

Here I am, trying to decide where I fit into this. I don't drink beer, don't know what a mudder competition is, and I don't have a beard. Is there a separate category that a beardless woman could fall into, one that doesn't like bacon flavored things? I must be in the later category.

Second group with a strange dislike for delicious bacon in solid form? Unless you are vegan, and that is cool too, just don't tell the bros because they may down vote you.

I'm not vegan, that must mean I'm safe.

That may spare you. Just don't say you find Trump unattractive and unseemly. They may go flaccid and lash out.

I think you are right. I'm terrified to say the T word in any context.

I find they search for posts with his name in them. Whatever gets them going, I guess.

They are watching us right now then, aren't they? For the record, I said "T word". ;)
