Genderuwa (in Javanese pronunciation: "Genderuwo") is a Javanese myth of a kind of genie or a spirited creature of a large, burly ape with a reddish black color, its body covered with thick hair growing all over the body. Genderuwa is the most widely known in the community on the island of Java, Indonesia. The Sundanese call it "gandaruwo" and the Javanese generally call it "gendruwo".

Her favorite residential habitats are aqueous rocks, old buildings, shady big trees or damp, dark corners. According to the myth, the domicile center of this creature is believed to be in a forest area such as Teak Forest of Danalaya Nature Reserve, Slogohimo Subdistrict, about 60 km east of Wonogiri, and in Lemah Putih, Purwosari, Girimulyo area in Kulon Progo, about 60 km to the west of Yogyakarta.

Genderuwa is believed to communicate and make direct contact with humans. Various legends say that the gender can change the appearance of himself following a man's physical form to tempt his fellow human beings.

Genderuwa is believed to be the figure of a creature that is idle and obscene, because his penchant seduces people, especially women and children. Genderuwa sometimes likes to pat a woman's buttocks, stroking a woman's body while she is sleeping, even moving the woman's underwear to someone else.

According to legend, genderuwa has the ability gendam to attract women to want to have intercourse with him.
