The Codex Leicester is a collection of scientific writings by Leonardo da Vinci. He brainstormed on many phenomena during his time and fortunately for us, kept this record. The writings provide insight into one of the world’s most gifted minds during the Renaissance period. It is a mix of Art and Science. The writings are basically brainstorming sessions.
Some of the highlights include:
- Water movement phenomenon: Leonardo tries to explain the movement of water and the obstacles that might obstruct it flow. He makes this manual a reference for the construction of bridges and Dams.
- Fossils: The writings also try to explain why fossils are found on mountains and how he believes that those mountains were large bodies of water millions of years ago.
- Luminosity of the Moon: The writings suggested that the moon was covered with water and the reason the moon was not brighter than the Sun was because the light it reflected was scattered.
In November 1994, The Codex Leicester was sold to Bill Gates for US$30,802,500.
