I hope I'm not stepping on some admin toes here but I have some advice for all of the new miners. I hope to try to alleviate some of the hostility. I'm not trying to be mean but please understand our position.
Mining is serious business. Many of us have already invested tens of thousands of dollars or more into this years ago. I personally started mining quark 4 years ago. I bought twelve GPUs and built 3 rigs back then. You need to understand our point of view. Every new miner makes difficulty go up and our shares go down. We are being polite by helping you.
But us getting lucky enough to get into cryptocurrency years ago is not what appears to separate us from you. The thing is, we aren't in this to get rich quick. We believe in cryptocurrency. Not to get rich but to make the world a better place.
So if you're here asking questions like, "how do I build a new mining rig", and "what is a wallet" it makes us not want to help you because it marks you as one of the laypeople who saw an article on Investopedia or Bloomberg and thought you might be able to cash in. It feels as if you aren't in it to help the cryptocurrency community. You appear to be helping yourself. We don't mind giving advice and taking part in encouraging discussion because it's fun.
But you need to "earn your stripes," as the saying goes.
Learn about what you are taking part in. And I don't just mean learn how to build a rig, get mining, and cash in. Learn about Ethereum. Please go to https://www.ethereum.org and learn about what it is you are becoming a part of. Why IS IT so valuable? Why is big business taking an interest? How WILL it help the world? And learn about the other coins. Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ripple, zcash, Dash, Library, etc.
Once you learn about cryptocurrency and you're ready to mine, use Google first. Everything you want to know is available with a Google search. There are several guides out there. And at least two active forums where people explain everything.
I suggest you Google, "ethereum mining guide." These guides will walk you through the process step by step much more thoroughly than we will be able to.
Here is a great one:

Next join these two forums:

Everything you need to know is out there. We're happy to help... our own. Are you one of us? Do you care about cryptocurrency? Or are you just trying to make money?
Please understand. I'm not an admin. I just joined this group a couple of days myself. I'm not trying to discourage discussion. Some of the recent posts aren't the kind of posts that raise our hackles. I just want everyone to understand what's going on.
This is very well written. I am one of the new people, just building my first rig now. However, I also have an option in 6 months to invest about 25k in upgrades.
I too believe in crypto. Consider this as my financial 2c. It wasn't long ago that when the concept of "buying on credit" was introduced, and everyone thought it would fail, collapse economies etc., and now credit is everywhere. People laughed at crypto, and now look at where it's going.
I like your point at "earning your stripes", and I am very grateful for the help of people like yourself who offer advice. While I am still very much in a beginner stage of this, I've been doing research for quite a while now. Will I succeed? Well time will tell, but I am looking at this as a long-term, potentially full time endeavor.
