Why Does Steemit Feel Like A Cult

in #steemit7 years ago

Every since I have joined Steemit, things have felt off. Every corner of this website is riddled with overly positive messages and praises. And, this stems from the fact that content suppliers are rewarded with money. This just creates one big circle jerk of positivity that is composed of people trying to earn a buck. People are afraid to criticize and speak out for the fear that they will not be paid. Now, I am not saying that positivity is bad but it creates an unhealthy and inorganic community where all negativity is absence. Also, people have become to focused on quality content but rather focus on content that will give them the most money. This may be an unpopular opinion but I wanted to say it and see if anybody agrees and maybe just maybe change the way this website feels.

No, no, there is a small group of rebels who go against the fake positivity and crap and actually try!
It's hard to find real people in between the chaos .. My best suggestion, the tactic that has worked reasonably for me, is to try and spot posts by real people and try to engage with them. Like I am doing with you now. Eventually you'll get a bunch of followers, and hopefully most of them will be actual honest users. It just takes a while and some dedication to get through the mess.

Things will probably improve as this is still beta and many features still will be implemented.

I'll give you a follow, help you start out! Feel free to follow me back if you're interested in crypto-related stuff. No spam or other nonsense, I promise!

The pursuit of money will almost always cloud the reasoning of people. Sad to say it but it is very obvious. One only has to read many of the headings of posts to see just how some people will scheme and manipulate to gain wealth.

I ran into a jerk yesterday, spreading negativity, who then downvoted 138 of my comments -- so, it's not all roses: https://steemit.com/life/@libertyteeth/hey-everyone-i-ve-got-my-first-steemit-stalker

Personally I'm recovering from multiple concussions and as a result tend towards irritability, but I'm doing my best to avoid letting it show through in my communications. I did get frustrated one day a few weeks ago while trying to program (it was my career; I can't do it any longer, it's tragic), here's that one: https://steemit.com/life/@libertyteeth/this-fucking-sucks-i-can-t-do-shit-crying

One bit of advice is to format your text into paragraphs. Also, click the "Markdown Styling Guide" to see how to use bold, italics, strikethrough, etc -- as well as headings:

This heading stands out and breaks up walls of text

Looks like a grammar checker could help as well -- several words are spelled correctly, but used incorrectly.

You gave me a business idea: start a Steemit proofreading service, where for a small fee, like perhaps 0.1 SBD/word, I'll proofread and suggest changes. Pricing it's the difficult part -- needs to be inexpensive enough for people to want to use it, and expensive enough for me to want to devote time to it. Perhaps I could hire employees... (And yeah, I know I'm dreaming as the concussions prevent me from doing much of anything productive, at least, for the time being...)
