Hello all, so as you can see from the title, something that I've realised after entering my second month on Steemit, is that gaining more followers won't get you more upvotes.
Of-course this information could be entirely misleading as I'm only talking about in my personal experience, so do let me know if you guys have also found the same thing.
Now realistically we all want as many upvotes as we can get on all our posts, as we put a lot of effort and time into them. Upvotes are a system of pay back, or in other words a reward.
Now I have nearly 280 followers - which seems like a lot, however the average number of upvotes I get for most of my posts is under 10. So what happened to the other 270 of my followers?
You may be posting perfectly good and interesting content, yet you just aren't reaping the rewards that you'd hoped to. So I've compiled a list of all the reasons why your followers aren't upvoting your content:
A lot of people create their Steemit accounts and follow other people specifically for followers. They do not care about their content, they just want them to follow them back. This is mostly in the case of newbies, people who also often quit Steemit when they haven't made much more than a dollar after being on the platform for a week. Of-course they're not going to upvote your content because they haven't logged onto Steemit and are not planning on doing so any time soon. (Of-course this is only a select few people, I'm by no means trying to accuse anyone or all new comers of doing this.)
Your followers might not have seen your content. A lot of people have so many followers posting content every day. With so many blogs to read, they might not have had time to scroll down far enough to read your most recent post. A good way to make sure more people view worthy posts is to resteem them. Obviously you can't resteem everything you read, so make sure that when you do it, it's a post that will benefit and be interesting for the Steemit community.
Your followers might have used up all their upvote power for the day. I'm not sure what the exact number of upvotes you're allowed per day, but I know that it's not too many. For that reason you probably have a better chance of getting upvotes on your blog if you post in the morning. By the evening people might have used up all their upvoting power for the day, and despite how good your content might be, they cannot upvote it.
This last one is probably the most obvious one of all. People might not be upvoting your content simply because it doesn't interest them. If you're writing about a variety of different topics, your followers may choose to upvote specific ones and not others. It doesn't mean that some of your posts are better than others (although they might be), it just shows that everyone has different hobbies and interests and realistically not everyone is going to like what you're writing.
I hope you all found that post interesting and helpful. If you have any more questions make sure to ask them in the comments and I'll try my best to answer them. Please upvote, follow and resteem this post as it would really help me out. Thanks so much for reading and have a lovely day everyone. :)
Here's where I will play devil's advocate: If you have 280 followers and only 10 upvote, let's say you had 1000 followers. The potential for 720 more people to see your post is there. I'm almost at 1,000 followers and I usually only get between 15-30 upvotes. BUT, this is much more than I got when I only had 280.
I see, 1000 followers is an amazing achievement, well done! Hopefully you'll be rewarded for your hard work and effort and the upvotes will keep on rising. :)
Hope so!
Great post. I hope it inspires authors to further improve quality.
Thank you, I hope so too!
Good job Charlie!! Spot on!! But I must agree with some, it is not about how many followers you have but which followers you have. I am just now learning that myself. Also, the number is 10 votes per day and the value drops a little each time you up-vote. Write good quality work, support those who support you and keep on keeping on. We'll all make it eventually. :-)
Yes very true. Ah thanks so much. Wow I didn't realise the number was so small. I usually go way over 10 upvotes.
Yes, HF19 changed all that. I am not sure I am liking it to tell you the truth. I follow a lot of people and have a variety of interest and want to vote up as many as I can but you can't do that. If you use the eSteem app then you can make your vote worth less and vote more, but I feel like my votes are not worth that much as it is so I want to give the most I can to people. Hard to adjust to this system. Voting after you have used up your 10 votes a day when you have no value left will result in actually taking value from the person you are up voting. Ugh, it is so confusing at times.
You are right. I've been gaining followers, but I notice a lot of them don't upvote. But I'm cool with it. The community, especially since hf19, is starting a bunch of various projects and initiatives to help users like us be more successful.
Joining Discord has been great so far. I'm going to keep writing content, getting know more people in the community, and together we can grow.
It may seem altruistic, but the only way for newer users to get more traction is to be positive about the journey. It's been a great ride the last two months . . . and it's just getting started. Good luck!
Aw thank you, yeah it's hard but still fun and worthwhile. I haven't heard of discord, would you recommend it?
Bring the quality content to help the community.. dont worry about followers or upvotes.. believe in helping the society by bringing the quality content , money will follow automatically as this is the platform built to recognise the talent and reward them accurately..
It's built to feed whales.
I hate loving it 🤣😂🤣😂
I see your point however my response is based on fundamentals and the concept behind steemit.. per example ...show me any other platform which is rewarding for the content posted by users like Steemit? Any platform in the early years will not be great and defect free, some may be taking in advantage of the system or platform... but on a honest note SteemIt is trying to make a difference, we all need to appreciate that and requesting to improve it further .. I am very optimisitc the platform will certainly evolve further .. i have joined just less than 2 days before but i am finding this is an awesome platform for the hardworking content writers..
.. Synereo.. is a new platform that pays like Steemit
Hope it helps
thank you.
You are welcome
Check my new post I have the link to Synereo
Very true, still working hard at it!
This is a very good post. Deserves much more!!!!
I'm resteemimg it.
Its not how many you know it's who you know. It's ALL up to the whales. Quality doesn't matter here 😂😂😂
Need to crack into the inner circles or starve. Not morning and groaning. Just recognizing the game.
Upvoted 👍 Good luck
Aw thanks for the help, and very good advice. Hopefully we'll both be whales one day!

This is a good postive steem inspiring post I saw the other day. It got peanuts 😀😀
But I see similar "steem related art" like a whale drawn on notebook receive $1000+.
Same authors, same rewards, same curators on all their post.
😀😀
Ole steem how we minnows hate loving you. STEEM ON STEEMERS!!! Whales be hungry
FEED THEM!!! 😂😂
Haha made me laugh. We'll make it, it'll just take time. I'll have a look at that article though, thanks for the link!
As a beginner, I found it so useful..I am having this problem deeply, I will follow your advises.
Well I'm glad I could help someone, as I'm still fairly new to Steemit myself! Maybe we can exchange tips :)
I find a lot of follows or people will give a great comment or review on the article, saying how much they liked it but don't upvote. Sometimes comments seem generic and don't really link to your post at all.
Yeah, i think the people who do this just want to get more followers. They don't actually care about helping the community or reading others posts. It makes me sad really because that's not what Steemit is all about.
Exactly. A little disheartening.
Sad to say, yet self upvoting (in my belief) seems to be the biggest problem. A lot of users are just plain greedy and will only upvote mostly their own posts and comments, leaving the scraps of their depleted voting power for us Red Fish/Minnows.

Very true, Steemit is a community and we have to help each other out not just look out for ourselves!
I agree.. and yet, as you can see here, this supposed "good, helpful, veteran whale" @craig-grant has taken a screenshot out of context to not only call his Whale Mob's attention to me yet also for profit.... https://steemit.com/steem/@craig-grant/steem-power
That's very unfair that he will get all that money for your hard work. :( I'm sorry about that
No worries. Meh, it's not like if they go on the attack I can't just abandon this account and make another. I just really don't want to do that.
Thank You for being understanding and respectful, hope you never loose touch of that.
I think you are onto something here. When you try and rush into having tons of followers, you can end up with a lot of people from category #1 or #2, where they dont log in or just follow too many people.
Also some follow-for-follow accounts don't actually upvote many other people, they mostly upvote themselves.
Getting quality followers is all about posting quality content and good comments. Based on this post I think you are in the right direction.
This post has been ranked within the top 80 most undervalued posts in the second half of Jul 02. We estimate that this post is undervalued by $20.36 as compared to a scenario in which every voter had an equal say.
See the full rankings and details in The Daily Tribune: Jul 02 - Part II. You can also read about some of our methodology, data analysis and technical details in our initial post.

I tend to agree with you, it is very easy to get new followers, just welcome every introduceyourself post and after a few weeks you will have a couple of hundred followers who don't give a damn about you or your intetests.
I've started to Unfollow a lot of people in my feed for that very reason, I'm sure that there are loads of other people who will follow them instead.
A bit like my life, I only want to read about people who interest me, who have something to say and those that actually care about my opinions.
Yes exactly, there's no point in having followers if they don't read your posts, which is why I'll probably be doing the same thing. Thanks for the tip :)
