The above painting is by Laura Lemons. I fell in love with it immediately and bought it.
Laura lemons was my friend. We talked about funny, silly, and incredibly dark subjects. I met Laura about 18 months ago through the adult coloring community. Laura had her demons and went through hell. It was devastating for her mental health. Suffering from depression & PTSD myself, I always empathized deeply with Laura.
Despite it all, Laura had a sense of incredible resilience. I was always amazed by how hard she tried. Recently though, Laura could no longer take it and committed suicide.
I could not be more deeply saddened.
It seems like yesterday we were celebrating her birthday back in December and then Christmas. She sent me an amazing hand made Christmas card, that I will forever cherish. Packaged also only the way Laura would send off a piece of snail mail.
Laura went through heinous abuse and trauma in her childhood/ adolescence/& adulthood. I point this out because:
You do not know people's stories. Be nice. Don't SHUN depressed people. Be there. Listen to them
Sometimes that's all a person needs.
Sometimes it's not.
I don't disrespect Laura for committing suicide.
I'm just really upset because, healthcare & basic income is so hard for people to attain. I know Laura needed medical attention but couldn't afford it because she had no insurance. Perhaps if we did not have greedy asholes running the country Laura would've had a different outcome.
Laura sufferered also from some severe physical maladies that made work or leaving her home very difficult to impossible at times.
Your physical quality of life has A LOT to do with your mental. I know if I was unable to exercise and go running, my PTSD and depression would be MUCH worse.
Not that Laura didn't try....Laura invested in a foot bike for her desk:
She tried standing exercises as she was not only an artist, but a Steemian, and she did allot of work on the computer.
She was always trying new diets and things. I give her 100% credit. She was very smart and savvy on a lot of subjects. She had books planned. Awesome ones.
My point is, and I feel qualified to say this as Laura's friend, as a healthcare professional, and a fellow sufferer of depression - if your physical quality of life is poor it makes the mental worse.
It's a vicious fucking cycle. Laura had no access to healthcare so was unable to address her physical ailments.
Had Laura lived in a different country with better access to health care one HAS TO WONDER where Laura would be now.
Just go to Laura Lemons steemit account. Read her blogs. She was a great writer. She had a bright mind.
Next time you step outside to walk your dog a few blocks, think of LAURA. When I go running tomorrow I will be. If you have depression, just remember how much worse it would be if you couldn't take a hike due to physical ailments. Or have access to basic healthcare because of physical ailments.
Laura stood up for people of all backgrounds, gender identities, and was a feminist. Laura published two coloring books focused on mental health and secondly female anatomy. Laura was not afraid to go near the "taboo" topics.
The vulva book should be in every gynecologist office. Nobody needs to be getting a labiaplasty because of a societal "standard."
Laura made cute and poignant cartoons as well.
I always did my best to be there for Laura in the short time I knew her.
Some more of Laura's art "City Song"
Laura and one of her awesome galaxy paintings:
I gotta say, steemit and the world has lost an amazing person. I know Laura is free of the suffering right now. I love you so much Laura. Thank you for being my friend. RIP.
I want to donate some of this post payout to an organization for mental health. I will later provide PROOF that I did so.
Please cherish your friends and loved ones. Don't take anything for granted. Don't assume things about people. You never know what hell they are enduring internally.
most of these photos are mine that I took. Laura shared the photo of herself with the galaxy painting with me. The foot bike I pulled from Google images
Bless you for the from-the-heart post. I can feel how much Laura meant to you, Chelsea. They say it's how you're remembered when you're gone that speaks to what kind of person you were in life. It's a damn shame we lost such a beautiful, artist and caring person! ((Hug!)) tip! @chelsea88
@ninahaskin Thank you for the kind words and support. I really did/ do care for her. I know she's free from pain now. I Look forward to donating to mental health. I just need to find a good organzation. Any suggestions?
None come to mind offhand. Wonder if there's any foundations posted under Robin Williams. Let me take a look
You could start something here on STeemit in Laura's name....as a fund to help starving artists or those suffering from depression? it is just an idea that I saw on Steemit earlier, that I think Laura would like. I am so sorry.
Thanks for the suggestion @stellabelle
I'll think that over
When looking for the "There is nothing wrong with your vagaina" coloring book I stumbled upon the Sad Girl Amazon page, used there is one copy for $175. The topics of the book seemed very close to her and information she felt could be helpful to some, and I agree a lot, maybe there is a way to make these books or pages affordable for people or even free.
@cryplectibles laura did that because there was at one point some stink within an online group regarding her use of a pen name. Versus her real last name. It caused her a great deal of anxiety because she was unsure of the legality of using a pen name so she upmarked it/ removed it. Very unenlightened group that caused her a lot of headaches this being one. Laura wanted her books to help people I'm sure she'd want them to be readily acessible I just unsure how we could do that. @kaylinart may know more as she is a coloring book artist and friend of Laura's
Wow, that is really horrible, just sad to hear and makes me feel a little anger, not at any person but just a general at the world anger that people are so ignorant on how their actions may effect others who may not have as strong a tolerance for things as them (I hope it's ignorance at least for those people so hopefully they can at least learn and grow one day). I follow @kaylinart and am going to just at least show her these comments and maybe she would know what, if anything, could be done to share these pages with people. Thank you for the suggestion and am sorry to know such a beautiful person was giving shit at all online for what can only be just opinions on how their own feelings on what or how books should be.
If anyone has a copy of each book and if it comes to people just wanting her works to be free and shared and out there, I would completely get nice scans and make pdf files and put in on http://archive.org for her works to live forever.
I have both books. One page out of sad girl that I colored and mailed to Laura as "fan art." But i have a pic of it. I'm unsure how to proceed with sharing the art "legally"..... but let us keep the archival idea in mind. It has promise. Keep in touch
A very good suggestion @stellabelle. We can do better and help depressed people by reaching out to them and showing them love. Depression is really something that no one can really tell how deep it eats into someone except the person wearing the shoes. @chelsea, i think you should consider this. Am very sure it will make laura happy wherever she is now.

@chelsea88 I am very sorry for your loss. It is clear that Laura was very talented and she meant a lot to you.
I found some information on mental health charities (Courtesy of Money Magazine). I hope this helps.
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
This national charity works to understand and prevent suicide by supporting research looking at the causes of suicide, helping those who have suicidal thoughts or those who have lost someone to suicide, and working with federal and state government on policies to prevent suicide and care for those at risk.
Brain & Behavior Research Foundation
This foundation awards scientific grants to those working to make discoveries in understanding the causes and improving the treatments of mental disorders, such as depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, autism, and bipolar, attention-deficit hyperactivity, post-traumatic stress, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. They've awarded close to $310 million to more than 3,700 scientists in the past 25 years.
Treatment Advocacy Center
This charity works to improve the treatment of severe mental illness by promoting policies and practices for the delivery of psychiatric care and supporting the development of treatments for and research into the causes of psychiatric illnesses, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Trevor Project
This national organization, founded by the creators of the Academy-award winning short film Trevor, provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender teens and young adults
Thank you so much. I will look into these organizations. ♡

this sucks. I spent most of the night crying because I feel i failed her and I couldn't quite believe that she has left us forever. I never drew her, but she drew me. Damn it. I'm sorry for your loss. Thank you for telling us more about Laura. She will be missed and I hope she is free from the pain that was unbearable.
I was up most of the night as well. You shouldn't feel you failed her. Though i feel similar feelings of "ownership ". Laura was stubborn both a good trait for her but ultimately led her to choosing this path. I'm shocked still. During her resilient peaks, i felt a lot of hope she'd pull through. At This point i feel some weird sense of "relief" if you want to call it that because at leadt she is free from her suffering. Thanks for the comment means allot
Aww I love this! You are so lucky to have her awesome galaxy painting! Her stuff was amazing! And I loved her coloring books! It breaks my heart that she won't be able to make more. I knew her books, Art, And posts would help a lot of people struggling :(
Everything she did, even the shirt designs were meaningful somehow! I'm going to miss her so much!
@kaylinart you wrote a wonderful tribute on her yourself. I think for one to be a true advocate for those struggling in this way, they've had to of seen the darkness in their life. She was trying to guide and help others.
In retrospect its probably why i choose the type of job i have but i digress. Thanks for pointing this out. Just another nice thing to remember about laura. Hugs to you. I know you two were good friends and she spoke highly of you
It is really sad what happened to Laura. I saw Alex's post a bit ago. I think a lot of us struggle at times but it is sad to see that Laura couldn't escape it. I know she had friends trying to help her like yourself and Alex.
Great idea as well to donate some of the posts payout to a mental health organization.
Thanks for dropping by. I'm not sure I can sleep tonight. It is really really sad. I can only imagine how her long time friends must feel. And yes I'm definitely donating!!

Thank you so much for writing this. Wow. I will be thinking of Laura for a long time to come & I'm sure we'll all be reminded of her brilliant mind for much longer on Steemit. It certainly makes you think of all the things wrong with the world, and all the things right with Laura. She was really lovely. And it is a very sad day today.
Thanks for dropping by and sharing this comment. It's very meaningful to me and everyone. You're right events like this certainly do put things into perspective. If you have any suggestions on a good organization for the donation please lmk. I was thinking suicide hotline but unsure
Any time <3 I am in New Zealand but I will think too.I'm sure there are many suitable charities out there that she'd approve of <3
Many thanks. Though i did point out US specific problems that probably contributed to Laura's worsening health, depression and suicide wreaks havoc globally.
It is the same machine globally sadly. With only few fortunate enough to not be included. We're all here on Steemit because we recognize this & want to change it. We will not let Laura down <3
Fortunately, this effort is seeing the light of day, but still grossly lacking... As you said though we are going to improve this. And kindly support and encourage one another in the process.
:)
I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. I've also seen Alex's post and read comments and it sounds as though Laura touched so many lives via steemit. As someone who has dealt with trauma, ptsd, and chronic illness/pain and (very minimally) suicidal ideology my heart breaks at the thought of anyone in that much pain. Laura and all who have been touched by her and are grieving her loss are in my thoughts and prayers. ❤️
Thanks for this thoughtful comment. Certainly hits close to home when you've dealt with mental illness yourself. I'm sorry also to hear you deal with this crap. It's not easy. If you know of any good orgs to donate lmk. Thanks
Im sorry to hear about what happened to our dear steemian. I wish she had enough support to go through a very hard time. In this world we live in now adays, the healthcare truly sucks and is a big factor for all this mess, imagine being dignosed and prescribed by any family doctor with psychmeds which does not really cure but mask all the emotions. Not even soending more than 10 mins and they already know what to prescribe. Everybody was born unique and what the health care industry is doing specially here in tha USA is making all meds and vaccines a 1 size fits all where in fact they dont know shit of what going on. I hope i changes soon, as they are making the people weak and sick and broke. One day a great change will come from the people themselves as we are all fed up with a system that is not working.
TRUE. I can personally attest to that 10 minutes. Ten, if your lucky.

Thanks a lot for your kind words. If you think or know of any legit charities let me know.
Sorry to hear that you lost a good friend - who was also an inspiration for many on Steemit.
I have created a special issue of Max Curation Edition showcasing her best posts. She leaves behind a rich legacy of content for the Steemit community.

I am sorry that you lost someone close to you. Even though I didn't get the chance to know her, it is so sad and tragic to hear of this news and I hope you will be okay! As I have said to others, it sounds like she was a wonderful person and the Steemit community has had a great loss. :(
Thank you for the kind words. She was great
I hope she knows it! Let me know if you know of any legit mental health orgs for the donation.
You're most welcome. Unfortunately I am not sure and it is always hard to know what ones take a big chunk for their salaries and what are legit. I really hope you find a great one!
Yeah that's my concern with all "charities"...
But i have time to look into it and subsequently share with you all later. Thanks again
Good luck and I look forward to hearing a successful search. :)

I just upvoted and resteemed this to help you get more payout for it and to hopefully help others suffering from depression from your charitable giving.
My condolences over your loss, it seems like Laura was an amazing person, and I hope you aren't suffering too much yourself from her loss.
Thank you. I am heavy hearted today. But i know she's in no pain so that's good. Just wish it hadn't come to that
I've lost people to suicide myself, there's always an element of regret and guilt there, but ultimately we can't save everyone no matter how hard we try.

Peace be upon her soul :(
This saddens me so much. Suicide is an altered state - i know as ive been right there. It's a state that feels so real - even tho it isnt and those thoughts feelings and sensations are only massive constant rushes of unexpressed adrenaline. I too have major health issues that take me to dreadful places - but tho i receive nhs care for those in the uk, emotionally, ive received nothing but abuse. The depressed mind is deeply misunderstood. It's a mind that works in a different way, not a broken mind, but one that needs feeding differently. So sad for her, so talented too. Amen xx
You raise a good point that even with access to basic health care it may've not "fixed" anything for our dear laura. Lord knows the "healthcare" i get re-traumatizes me sometimes
I think ALL my poetry stems from the trauma i received at the hands of the nhs. Oh well, at least it unleashed my creativity. I campaign heavily now for mental health support for people with chronic illness. Even set up a charity. Still falls on deaf lugs mostly, but slowly getting thru. Being a musician and writer defo helping. Support so vital. <3
Following you. I want to give some of this to a charity. Tell me about yours
Hi again :) my charity is www.withoutwings.weebly.com - don't know if this link works here. It's specifically about providing compassionate support for local people with autoimmune arthritis. We are VERY vocal and proactive. I am deeply passionate about the subject - mainly due to my own horror story of course, but now due to everyone else's. Rheumatoid, Psoriatic, juvenile arthritis, ankylosing, lupus.... all these kinds of illnesses. They are horrific, misunderstood, volatile, unpredictable and often strike people of working age.... and we are a relatively small island community with limited support but I never expected to get treated like a piece of shit. I am also now working closely with a local cancer charity who also offer emotional and mental support. They are a much bigger charity than mine and are planning to branch out to cover all illnesses. They have been so lovely and kind to me - brought back some of my faith in human nature. You have to keep believing in people. I do everything voluntarily. I care more about justice than money - which frustrates the hell out of my husband haha. probably why he insisted I got on steemit! xxx
https://steemit.com/poetry/@girlwithoutwings/more-secrets-of-the-perpetually-sick in case you are interested :) This poem is being used by the larger charity I mention to help secure more funding. I hope they get it xxx

That's nice. ♡
Nice post,,,,,
I saw another post about Laura's suicide earlier. What a loss of beauty and uniqueness. It inspired me to tell my own story of how I got over my depression in a blog post this morning in the hopes of helping someone else. My heart goes out to Laura's loved ones.

Hey @chelsea88, this is well written and well said. I too, connected with laura as a steemian. She supported me in the early days. I've written my own tribute and want to start an annual award for artists, to be here on Steemit, in her honour.
With you having known her better than I could have ever; I'd love to have your opinion on such a thing. I'd love for it to be an annual thing, and we donate the post rewards to mental health initiatives / benefits.
What do you think?
this is a good idea. You could start an account with this idea and build a community.
I think laura would like a steemit forward initiative. Let me know what you come up with

Your tribute to her is moving to me. It's remarkable, really. I feel sadness for your loss, and I believe you're right about the thought that she is free from pain now. I hope you can hold onto that thought, and feel the hope in it, and be encouraged. I thank you for the love and lightness I feel in your images, and your memories.
Thank you so much. That's a good way to look at it. Thanks for pointing out you enjoyed the lightness in the images. In a sense, that's what i was trying to convey. Remembering the good and that's how I will honor laura memory.
I am sorry for your loss @chelsea88. What a wonderful tribute to your friend. Laura definitely was very talented and had a beautiful heart.
I had a friend that I have known since I was 14 years old (I am 48 now) who killed himself in 2012. We both suffered from depression and suicidal thoughts when we were younger, but I thought that with 3 kids, a wife, and his faith would save him. I was wrong.
Take care of yourself, please.
Oh wow. That's rough. I'm so sorry. How devastating for the family he left behind. Suicide is not a victim- less crime truth be told.
Thanks for your support and dropping by
I never realised this was a tribute( I was captivated by the galaxy painting) till I read the part where you wrote RIP. I had to quickly scroll up and was shocked to realise I didn't read the topic.
My heartfelt condolence to you, as one of her friends, and to the family and to the entire world, especially the art and book lovers. We have lost a gem here. Sleep on.
The painting is something isn't it? I was afraid some people might see only that.... but i wanted to post that one as that's the day i received the painting and i was really happy about it. That was about a year ago now. I feel that photo captured my happy moment that Laura created.
Yes. I think the photo did capture that. It was that captivating that I didn't read the topic. She was truly gifted. I always wondered why most of the truly gifted people don't stay longer with us. I really hope she's in a better place. Sorry for your loss.
<3
Very sad news! I had just connected with her RIP x
Yeah it really is. I'm sorry to hear you aren't gonna be able to further connect with her
She will live on in the blockchain and her contribution to this great community :)

I had no idea that she had these books published, what great topics. I just emailed baby momma about that one on the right for the daughter, thank you for sharing this post. The cover image on that Sad Girl is so striking I probably will not forget it for a very long time, at least I hope not.
This is so sad. If for any cosolation, she is free from pain.
Yes <3
Beautiful tribute.
I came to steemit too late to have known her. It's incredible what an imprint she made on so many people here. I can tell just by surfing these posts...
RIP @lauralemons I see you knew your home back in the galactic and hope you are comfy on your star. <3
I feel Laura is at peace now. <3
Sorry you could not have known her. Check @lauralemons you can see all her blogs
Well, I feel sad now. Her and I exchanged replies about building a tiny home. She wanted a tiny home if it could have a larger open space, and her replies to me were always nice. This is very sad.
Yes it is. I'm glad you can you remember your positive interactions with Laura. ♡
I was a follower but did not know her personally. I guess I connected with her blog. Deeply saddened because once ur brain chemistry is fucked up u cant see straight. There's always a way out. Just a few days ago she shared this inspiring and amazing post about being 36 days sobers of drinking (and smoking). That is not nothing. Thanks, well done and helped me to get to know her more.
I know. Laura had some freaking serious will power and determination. Certainly way above the "nothing " level. Quitting both smoking and drinking - Not easy. Thanks for your comment and support.
Wow she was awesome.
That'd be an understatement.
Very true! Don't assume things about people, you never know what hell they are enduring internally.
I read something once saying when you assume "you make an ass out of u & me " ..... true
You are so lucky to have her awesome painting
Yes, I agree. I really cherish it
I never met her here because I am a new member, but I was saddened to learn about what happened to her.
Everybody deserves healing.
I wrote about depression lately too.

You should be able to accept the fact, the departure of @lauralemons has indeed become the choice of her own, keep the spirit and move to become a more successful!
I know it was Lauras choice. I even pointed out in my post i do not disrespect her for it. I'm just sad to have lost her
I empathize. I am sorry (wistful) that you lost your close friend. I can see from her GALAXY painting that she was indeed talented.
Will go look at some of her posts. Thanks 4 sharing this info with me, & all of us Steemians. Sad day indeed.
Donated a small amt.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment and kind regards and support. Means a lot
