Normally, we are presented with situations in which we must choose what to do when carrying out an activity or task. In principle we can choose to carry out the activity or task by ourselves or delegate it to another person, but how to decide when to do it and when to delegate it?
Simply analyzing the nature of the activity or task and determining if it influences in being able to reach some of our personal or professional objectives. In the case of concluding that the activity or task does not influence our objectives, then we can delegate it.
You can define "delegate" as the process that allows us to confer on another person an assignment to perform a task granting him the necessary authority and freedom, but always keeping the final responsibility for the result.
What are the advantages of delegating over not delegating?
Advantages of delegating:
- Allows you to focus on what is important
- Save time to cover more things
- Improves the resolution of problems and allows doing it more quickly and efficiently.
Disadvantages of not delegating:
- Overload of tasks or activities
- It can contribute to the disorganization and cause inefficiency
- It generates stress and consumes more time.
What steps can we follow in the process of delegating an activity or task?
- Define the task or topic to be delegated.
- Select the person according to their skills and abilities.
- Explain the reasons and specify the results that are required.
- Specify the necessary resources and agree on the key dates.
- Ensure fluid communication and the necessary support.
- Provide feedback on results.
Finally, we can see that by effectively delegating certain activities or tasks we will gain time to focus on our objectives and other activities of greater importance to us.
