Weekly Rant: Let’s stop complaining and start building

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Every week or two I feel the need to release some of my frustration on a written rant, why is this?

Because I don´t understand why people get paid to blog and have the nerve to complain about it.

Here are some of the things I have read that bothers me:

1. - Newcomers don´t really receive any money and are discouraged to keep posting: well this is not entirely true, sometimes first poster can earn good money, you can check out @betamusic as one example. But yeah, most newcomers don´t get much upvotes but this is normal. If I was to open a Twitter account today I would have no followers and therefore no retweets no mentions and no likes, I would have to build up my audience trough different ways, it is the same in steemit. So instead of complaing and threatening to quit why don´t you first focus on building your follower list?

2. - Rules are being changed all the time.. is just not fair: In a democracy if a group of citizens are against a specific law they can collect signatures to have it change. In many countries gay people can now marry, abortion is now legal and so is medical marihuana; this was all possible because rules were changed. If this is possible in a society why should we stick to the same immutable rules in steemit?

3.- Only English post do well: Ok, this is something that I have been personally working on, trying to help Spanish writers get their words read by the more people. However, this is true for the whole internet; I used to write in English over at Medium because my posts got more views. Steemit doesn´t even have 2 months yet, communities need to be built over time. On the bright side we are already seeing a lot of Chinesse, Russian and Spanish posts.

Don’t get me wrong, it is not that I don´t see the obstacles that Steemit has for mass adoption, I could tell you a bunch of things that I think need to improve: from distribution to the interface. But I do like to put things into perspective, just a couple of weeks ago we had nothing, we now have more than 70k users and growing.

Let´s all build the Steemit that we want; the platform gives us the ability to do this, we can discuss and vote on the witnesses that better represent our views. Critics are good as long as they are constructive.

Let’s be positive but above all things, don´t lose perspective of things.

Stay humbild.

I've seen a suggestion that maybe some Spanish/English speakers could offer translation services and get paid in Steem Dollars. There are so many ways to make money here other than just writing. In fact, if you make money trading and curating, you can gain the Steem Power to affect trends. But it does take time. I agree with you - we shouldn't be complaining, but looking for ways to work together.

everyone wants to come and win a lot in his first post, changes are always necessary and we must adapt to them.
my native language is Spanish, and the post only in Spanish I have done, was the last.

@ Question #2: Steemit is owned by Steemit Inc. and development decisions are driven mainly by the majority of stakeholders (whales). Not sure one can claim democracy here when thinking about the above but things have been held under control so far and fairness has been attained.

I know GitHub sounds too geeky to most, but it could be a way to vote for changes with the reactions on the Issues/Pull requests until an actual voting system is in place (here's a new steemit tool idea :):) ).
Maybe in the future we will really get to decide what is the first post payout time, or what gets displayed and where in the profile page :)
For now and with the small active userbase, it's perfect as it is and it's something we all need to accept :)

  1. @betamusic isn't a newcomer since that account transferred 368.132 SBD to a whale of an account called bittrex. Publishing Bot? One can only speculate but I've never seen some random whale recieve a bunch of SBD from a random person. Polished example? Probably..

  2. One of the main selling points to Steem is to "blog and get paid". If the changes are to increase the positive tone of Steemit then we should all be for it. Right now, it looks as though the inactivity is increasing and a negative tone regarding Steemit is growing too. Getting paid in nickel, dimes, and pennies for creating a blog post is very defeating. Especially, if you spent all day creating it. The value of Steemit is going down and something needs to be done to stop the bleeding.

  3. Someone once told me that anyone can speak in their own language. Yet, if you want to do business, make great money, then you need to read, write, and speak in English.

A whale called Bittrex?!?!.. I sure hope you are joking, you didnt even bother looking up bittrex on google?..

So this account https://steemit.com/@bittrex/transfers is the company bittrex?

Lots of transfers and receiving over there.

Bittrex is an exchange, she transfer the funds to sell them for bitcoin.

Go rant away ;)
