Excited to be a dolphin!
After getting a very good reception and a fast following, I decided to start investing more in Steem. Over the last few days I have been powering up my account to get to dolphin status. I believe very strongly in Steemit and the great active community we have here! I hope to one day get to Orca, but I am a long way off from that.
As a celebration to my new Steemit rank and in the spirit of sharing and giving back to the steemit community, I will give every comment a 100% upvote. (Don't spam though guys, if a conversation is developing then great but I won't upvote spam).

What exactly constitutes .....a dolphin....
is there a certain amount to have in your account? or ....what does it exactly?

It certainly is! not at dolphin but absolutely at orca. I just did it because I believe in Steemit a lot!

I'm beginning to understand it fully, but it is still a bit confusing. One follow up question for example: Is interest actually being paid at the moment? I've only been here for less than a week, and I just claimed my first pay out. Will that eventually earn interest?
For example, if I could earn interest on an investment here, that is way more of an incentive to buy into the project as an investor.
There was interest payed at the start of Steemit but not anymore. I don't know if they intend to bring back that feature.

Haha I just decided that I believe in Steemit more than I believe in dash. Used almost all my dash for Steem. I am confident I made the right decision. If not I can always buy more dash with steemit rewards :)

Mai I ask you will you just simply keep your steem? Or will you use it to power up? As seems like you can earn some "interest" for the vote it you power up. But will be more difficult to cash out.

Of course, steem power is essentially the backbone of Steemit, the more steempower you have the more your votes are worth, the more your posts are noticed and how much your curation rewards are worth. In short, the more steem power you have the more money you make.

Welll I only have $100 Bitcoin ... $100 Ethereum and $100 of Litecoin .... do I need a Bittrex account ? I only have a Coinbase wallet so far
Bittrex is a good exchange, just make sure you never leave any crypto on an exchange.
Where do you recommend I keep it ?
A paper wallet or a hardware wallet is preferred, however for smaller amounts of crypto a wallet like the Exodus wallet is good enough. Of course if you decide to convert it to steem and power up your account you don't have to worry about wallets.

Would a person with 5 thousand steem power and ranked as a 50 in reputation have equal influence as someone with the same amount of steem
Power who might be ranked as a 60 or 70 reputation? Just curious how the two work together.
Yes 0-5000 is a minnow, 5000 to 50000 is a dolphin, 50000 to 500000 is an orca and 500000 + is a whale. Although some people consider 200000 a whale. Depends who you ask really. As for reputation, it has no relevance to your voting power what so ever. Hope that helps.
Thank you so much for answering my questions. I'm just trying to wrap my mind around this. I understand that the amount of steem power is what dictates your voting power... but what significance, if any, does the reputation score play in all this?
Reputation is only really used as a metric to show your past activity. If somebody has got a lot of downvotes their reputation will be low. You start with 25 reputation but I'm sure you have seen people with 10 reputation, this is because they have done something to annoy people. On the other hand if you have a higher reputation people have upvoted you. In short, if you see somebody with a high reputation chances are they make good content and if you see somebody with under 25 they don't or they copy other people's work.
Thanks again for your kindness in explaining all this to me. There was a post asking if a person could make a living on Steemit. My reason for asking is because my husband had a stroke and I still need to care for him as well as putting food on the table. He lost his mobility so he requires a lot of my time. If you or anyone could give me a scenario how this could be achieved I would certainly appreciate it. I know I'm full of questions but I'm most sincere in asking them. Again, much thanks for taking the time with me.
Resteemed plus my two cents worth... figuratively & literally.
Well if you want to make a living on steemit it will require at least one of the following:
-Enough money to power up your steem power.
-Time, patience and consistent well written posts.
-Enough time to make plenty of comments on others work.
I have 5000 steempower. At 100% voting power I upvote at $1.80 currently. This number changes based on the reward pool and the current price of steem. If they fix the reward pool and the price of steem goes back up, my vote will be close to 3 dollars. You can vote 10 times a day at 100% and maintain your voting power in the upper 90%. This means if you are upvoting your own posts you can make 18-30 dollars a day.
Writing posts should be done to the best of your abilities, spend a bit of time spell checking and making sure it's your best. With time you will get followers and they will upvote you. With good content and a following of about 300 you can expect 1-5 dollars per post.
Comments are important, if you respond to a post with a good comment you will get upvotes, I can make anywhere from 2-15 dollars a day on comments.
In short, with a profile my size for example, you should be able to make anywhere from 20-50 dollars a day. Bigger profiles make more than me and smaller make less. Work out where you would want to be based on where I am and that should give you a reasonable basis for assessment.
I hope this helps and I'm really sorry about your husband, I too have had family members effected by a stroke, so I am sympathetic.

I've always been a hard worker so I guess my first step is trying someway to get more steem power. This will give me a place to start. I've been looking for answers and you were the first that was willing to explain so much.
Thank you for your understanding about my husband. Our lives were wonderful until the day of the stroke. It seem as though it came out of nowhere. It was our day off and since we love animals we were going to the zoo that day and then spend a leisurely day just enjoying life.
There's so much to tell but basically our world was rocked but he's still alive and I'm praying to learn better coping skills to adapt to our new life.
