The history of Bitcoin is more complicated than you imply. It hasn't been "marketed" in anything like a traditional sense of that word. Their is an argument that the price is so high more due to the "anti-marketing" nature of how Bitcoin started and has continued.
Keep plugged into to steemit.com and you will see many folks working on their own projects to market STEEM. Lots of little projects add up to momentum.
You may have missed the main point in my article though. Marketing STEEM to attract more users is already baked into the price. It is well known and publicly known that marketing is going on and users will be growing.
That needs to continue just to meet current expectations. To grow beyond current expectations, new and surprising and unexpected information has to become available
