Steemit Things I've Learned In My First 9 Days - #3

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

I'm going to write a series of things I've learned here... as I learn them. I will keep them short and to the point to not waste too much of anyone's time. They are obviously meant for the new people because frankly they (like me) probably jumped in and have to learn on the fly. (Note: this is the 3rd in the series, if you want to see the others go to the bottom of this post for the links)

-If you have any questions about what I discuss, ask them in the comment section below

-If you like what I talked about and think your followers would like to learn from it, "RESTEEM" it.
(note: you don't get paid to resteem something, you just help to spread around a message that you like)

-If you have another topic you would like me to cover next, then also reply that request in the comment section

I asked today what my fellow newbies wanted discussed, so B it is:

Your Reputation and Why It Matters

First, your "Reputation" is a major factor that influences everything here on steemit. Reputation (shown above) is simply what value you bring to the community. It is a score that is calculated based on your interactions with others and how many upvotes you get and from whom. Its a way that steemit measures and sifts through the members that are good for the system vs. those that aren't so good.

Reputation is weighted giving the larger more prominent members' opinions higher weight. So if a newbie (like us) likes you or a post/comment you made, it improves your reputation score; but if a "WHALE" likes you or a post/comment you made, it REALLY REALLY improves your reputation score. Its like the smartest or coolest guy in school endorsing you, so your rank goes up among the others.

As your reputation goes up, so does your own influence over others. People look up to their peers and strive to improve their relationships with the people they value. This helps you get more followers and get more attention to your posts, which essentially helps you get RESPECT.

So as a newbie the thing to focus on most is improving your Reputation Score.

How Can I Increase My Reputation

The best way to get an increasing reputation is to get out into the community and "engage" with others. Read other authors' posts and comment on what YOU LIKED about them. But be sincere and original, because after all it is your reputation you are trying to build. Don't copy and paste canned answers, but truly respond to others with respect.

(Helpful Hint: I have earned far more money from commenting in the comment section than from making any post I've made... Like 100x more)

I try to read at least 50 different posts a day in areas of interest to me and comment honestly when I see something important to say. The authors realize who is saying good things because they mean it (versus just trying to get an upvote), so just be genuine and open and that fact will get you the respect. The old saying: give respect and get respect!

Hint: remember anyone can read anyone else's comments and see what you are saying to others, so realize that you can't really fake being real for very long. So be genuine always ;)

Finally another way to improve your reputation is to get noticed by doing something kind for others. You'd be surprised at how many likes I've gotten from the big steemers when I decided to help others. I didn't offer to help someone for the purpose of getting their respect, but I earned some respect by helping others out here on steemit. Does that make sense?

A great place to do this is when interacting with other newbies and politely helping them learn some things that you've learned that they might not know. All the big steemers want a great and charitable community with helpful and encouraging members, that's what will make this platform more valuable. And when you realize in order for EVERYONE to make money we all need to be good steemians, you will recognize and respect those people that help others too.

How Do I Track More Carefully My Reputation Score and Points

You can track very carefully your reputation points at the following link:

https://steemd.com/@yourusername (Yes this is the same spot as your Voting Power page) ;)

a tutorial 2.JPG

Notice it is calculated to the more detailed tenth of a point, which comes in handy to see the impact of your interactions as your score grows.

If you scroll down that page on the left you will also get an EVEN BETTER look at your reputation by seeing the way the system calculates it EXACTLY

a tutorial 3.JPG

This is just another tip of something I have learned in my first 9 days. I have many more things I've learned and if people seem to find it interesting, then I will continue to prepare more of these tips that I find. It is up to you in the community to let me know if it is useful.

I want to point out that I am by no means an expert and I am just offering my humble advice based on what I have learned. If any more experienced users have more to add, I welcome them to do so and help everyone out!

Thanks for reading and I hope I can help a few people along the way :)

Those are some really good informations.Good to know thank you for sharing it with us.
I followed you :)

Thank you @pandatrex, I appreciate you telling me that you liked it.. It motivates me too :) and ps... I follow you too!

Great post! You seem like a very genuine person, so you've got a loyal follower out of me! I love the incentive on Steem it to be the kindest most supportive version of yourself. I kind of wish Facebook and Youtube would have a system like this. Then people would be less interested in trolling other people's posts.

For a newbie, you have actually done a great work finding out and learning about steemit

I can see from your post you actually know what and how to be a great Steemian.

Communication and Relation is the key of succeeding on this great platform. You even mentioned you made more earnings from commenting geniunely on peoples post which i really love. You are whale in the making, just keep your head down and keep doing what you are doing and i am pretty sure one day, You would get there

With great efforts, comes great rewards

I'm humbled @bcrafts, those are very nice compliments and I appreciate you taking the time to tell me. I also am happy to see you coming here to show everyone (especially the newbies) that the larger steemians do really read our posts and do care about the things I talked about in the post. It is this kind of affirmation that makes this site so viral and I'm very excited to be here! Thank you again and lets all have a wonderful 2018!!!

Welcome once again,

I would keep an eye on your account
You have got the indigredients of a whale in making

What a great post @davemccoy. I came across you by way of one of your comments to someone about how to tell the difference between the different Steem currencies.
I could see the genuineness of your comment in the suggestion you made.
There are 2 qualities that I see in your posts and I greatly admire them. They both by the way exemplify 2 things that Jesus spoke about in the Bible:

  1. Helping others (ideally without thought on getting something back)

Matthew 7:12
Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

  1. Humbleness/meekness in your comments. (Also reflected by your humble bee graphic at the end of your post)

Matthew 5:5
Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.

These qualities will add benefit to all those that “genuinely” copy them but it will also benefit the Steemit community at large.

Thank you, I truly appreciate your efforts.

Thank you very much @sighmanjestah, I'm truly honored that you took your time to not only read the articles/comments, but to also understand my motives and intentions. Its also nice that you tell me the spots in the bible that addresses the traits you saw in me. And while no man can be perfect, I realized a long time ago that I should always be thankful to God for my life and live it in such a way that He would be proud.

I really really appreciate the kind words and I'm thankful that we have connected here on steemit. If there is ever anything I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask. You have made my day with this comment to me and I want you to know that!

I joined Steemit in May 2017 and was fortunate to connect with some wizened Steemians, most notably @papa-pepper and @rebeccaryan. Both of these individuals were very helpful and answered questions that someone else may not have bothered answering.
Unfortunately I also got scammed by an individual by entering the wrong username. The wrong username was specifically used to scam SBD's for an upvoting service. Not only did I send SBD to the wrong person, but I also got in the middle of a whale fight. I didn't know how to handle it. The person that scammed me ended up on his own upvoting me the amount that was erroneously sent. I did not ask him to as I did not want to get involved in their fight.
I also was scammed on the steemit chat and "donated" some SBD to someone who was not who they said they were.
I finally got my wife her own Steemit account and I suggested to her to follow you and I will encourage her to look at your 1st posts and your suggestions. She is a technophobe and so I am trying to teach her some of the ins and outs of just using a computer. It's a struggle, but she is making progress.

If you haven't already come across @papa-pepper you may want to check out a video series he did back in june or july on some tips for minnows.
This is the link for #13 of the series and if you look at the comments sections you will see a link to the 1st video. He tries to keep them under 10 minutes. I think he was not updating the past links in his blog. This may be a great source for some minnow questions you may have or those that you are helping.
https://steemit.com/help/@papa-pepper/advice-from-papa-video-13-tips-for-newer-users-on-steemit
He is quite the character and it may not look like it but he is quite humble.
Have a great rest of the day and I'm sure our paths will cross again.

Once again what a wonderful thing you are doing for me today by telling me about @papa-pepper and @rebeccaryan and what they did for you in the past. You @sighmanjestah will be one of my "@papa-pepper's and @rebeccaryan's" in my future stories about who inspired me when I was new. I can't believe you have taken the time today to not only give me some inspiring insight, but you now give me a heads-up on how to navigate the system (both pluses and minuses)...

I am very enthusiastic about the platform and the potential to truly change people's lives, but I am also aware that many people in life will try to take advantage of people's natural naivety and kindness. While I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you, I'm glad to see that you persevered and overcame it. I will keep your story now in the back of my mind and be careful to mention to others to do the same.

As to your wife, I would be happy to help her in any way I can. I speak relatively plainly so I'm used to helping people just starting. Plus I'm learning as I go so people also get the benefit of knowing I just learned it too. So if I can help her, encourage her to ask me anything and I will address her questions directly. Just tell her to tag me in any comment and I'll catch up to her when I go through my replies (which I do first before I do anything else). :)

Finally I will definitely go through the video from @papa-pepper and read the link you sent me. I am still learning new things every day and realize that many know more than me. I think the value of my role here is not in my artistic abilities (which I have none), but in my ability to have the patience to help everyone (particularly the new ones) and my desire to do my part to make steemit a place that can truly change people's lives. I have seen much in my life and experienced lots of wonderful things, so at a minimum I would like to see many of the poorer people in the world have a chance to have a decent life. I think this could be such a place to give them that opportunity.

Thank you again so much for your reaching out to me... If there is anything I can do for you please let me know. I'm so happy you found me and I hope you have a fantastic and wonderful day! :)

ps... if you could tell your wife to tell me who she is when she's ready, I will give her encouragement to contact me anytime.

My wife is @lildebbiecakes she posted just below your last post to me.

SDG

awesome, and again thank you for making the connection to me!

I watched it, its a very good perspective on things and I learned some new things to help me in the future. I think it is great how well all the people before me are doing and its nice to actually be a part of the community. Thanks so much again for the kind words and direction, it is very much appreciated!!!

Rick
You’ve got such light that shines shines shines! Way to follow our lord and savior. 👍

Hey @lildebbiecakes, I'm very happy to meet you! You're husband contacted me on this thread and I am very impressed by him and his good heart. So I'm sure you are equally a wonderful person and its my pleasure that he introduced me. :)

He mentioned that you are new here and I am too. In fact we are fellow 2017 Classmates :)

I have spent a lot of time since I've been here trying to learn everything I can, and I've been helping others who just ask me questions. I don't presume to know more than anyone, but if you do have a subject you don't understand or would like to know more about something then just ask me. If I know it I will be happy to share it. Its how we grow as a community and develop connections that can last forever.

I have also written about 10 articles about the things I've discovered that I found to be important to me doing better here. (like this one) If you would like to look through my blog you can see what interests you and what doesn't. Also if you don't have the time and just want to tell me what you want to know how to do most, then I can just give you a direct reply.

Bottom line is I like to help others and especially good people. So if you have anything you want to ask me, I'd be very excited to help you.

Now we are connected through you're husband and I welcome you to work with me as we make this community even better!

Have a nice day/night and a wonderful weekend... And I hope you stay in touch :)

Thank you @davemccoy for such a welcoming.I can see your sincerely a warm ,loving, and a very compassionate person. My kind of people! I have already started following you because my husband Rick said to me “Deb you need to follow this guy, you’d really like him and He talks about helping people that’s his thing”. So already we have something in common, the world needs more love ❤️ and boy it’s very rewarding and fun to spread it isn’t it? I’m an artist, I paint,draw,craft...... the list goes on. With Steemit I’ve got a huge chance to “spread the love” by entering art contests. When I enter a contest I primarily think about how I I can convey a message of love. So far I feel like I’ve done this I hope 🤞.

Wow! grate tips. Thank you for sharing @davemccoy. so glad to find you on Steemit. We just started a Facebook group where we help upvote each other on Steemit. If you like to join please follow this link:

Well thank you @jasnadao :) ... and same to you about finding each other! I will join the group on facebook (even though I don't spend much time on FB, I would be happy to meet more steemers) ... Thanks for the invite and for the comments too :)

I tried to connect but got this message,:

Maybe I have to be your friend their first??? lol ...

ps... I'm happy that you would even think to invite me to your group (even if I'm not allowed in) ;)

Wow....
There is so much to learn from this post, the simplicity of ur explanation is so splendid .have a learnt alot. Keep sharing your experience with us. Its surely helping somebody out there

Thank you so much for the reaction @medinho, I really appreciate the recognition and feedback. And more importantly, I'm happy you learned from it! I agree that if it is helping someone out there, then it is definitely worth doing and I also thank you for the words of encouragement! Happy new year and you should enter your reply in the contest, you never know what will happen ;)

Thank you dear. Last night your encouragement on my post "Goodbye Steemit" did well. now i read your tips and I think its really workable. before starting work again i am interested to read all your tips in other blogs then i will go to work again. Hopefully it will work for me this time.

WOW!!
Firstly I just want to say a big thanks to you Dave McCoy. For taking your time out to learn these, it shows you have the right motivation which is aimed at seeing this community grow.
I for one has learnt a lot by your sincere opinions and I hope every newbie gets to see this.
I support the idea of having nice posts that would attract great comments which forms the basis of lasting interactions on the network.
Thanks for teaching me what it really means to be a steemians.

Steemit is all about sharing valuable information with the word. I

Thank you very much @hokpulor, that is nice that you took the time to give me such compliments! It is definitely appreciated and I'm also happy that you recognize that I am sincere. I also agree with you very much that the basis of lasting interactions on the network is through good communication!

Also I would like to say that I certainly didn't teach you what it means to be a steemian, I can tell by your comments that you were a natural steemian on your own. I maybe helped you to see that you have it, but it has been inside you the whole time! You understand what steemit is about, and I am proud help you share that vision to the world! :)

Great approach you taking @davemccoy this is very helpful as I started at roughly the same time. The steemd info is really cool didn't know how to navigate it. Keep the good work as always, enjoy the coming 2018.

Thank you very much @cryptkeeper17, that is a nice thing to say... And I agree that is cool, and there is even more cool stuff I've learned that I'll be writing about soon too :) ...

Thanks for taking the time to reply and I hope you enjoy the awesome 2018 that is coming too!!!

Can't wait keep up the amazing work sir.

Great post sir....
More happiness in ur life and in coming new year....
Happy Steeming....🌺🌻🌷🍀🌾💐🌸🎆🎌💮🌹🍂🍂🏵🌼🎉✨🍁🌳🌲🎃🎄🎆🎇✨🎈

Well thank you for taking the time to tell me that @mohansingh, I really appreciate it :)

And much happiness in your new year and fun steeming to you too!

ps...I like the colorful icons in your post, it gives it a special touch :)

Thank you sir....🌼🏵🍁

nice post davemccoy , thanks for the information. its very helpfull.
i follow you and its honor for me if you also check my post @sibtainali :D keep sharing :D

I'm glad I could help you @sibtainali ... I am following you and look forward to stay in touch with you!

And again what a great info for us newcomers. I fully understand now the small circle is. Ill never stop supporting you. Quick suggestion, how bout for the next is about the currencies and what are the uses of it. Much love :)

Well thank you @qyugmo :) I told you that you were going to do good and I knew you would get it! You are very smart and will do well... And I plan on doing just that (talking about the currencies), but you didn't vote in my earlier post asking to pick the topic so the B's won... hahaha... JK I'll get to it very soon my friend! :)

Hahaha! Sorry for that my friend. But now I'm surely upvoted for this but I'm still recharging. No worries. Just tell me what I can help and maybe sometime lets share ideas on your future projects. Its already nap time here so gotta go :)

No worries @qyugmo, get some sleep so you're fresh for another good day tomorrow :)

Great post @davemccoy. I didn't really know anything about Steemit when I started a year ago and actually left for quite a few months, as you'll find many other people have done. Most never come back. I saw a sign, now I'm back for good and really enjoying it. I think most people only see $ signs but it has to be much more than that or you quickly realise you are selling your time for about 10 cents an hour when you factor it all in.

Even harder still when you live in a country with high wages, such as here in Australia. I can earn significantly more per hour just at work than I ever could on Steemit. I do it now solely cos I love it and it gives me motivation to grow and learn, share my art and life with others, and also converse with people around the world I would otherwise never know anything about. Keep up the great quality posts and I'm sure you'll keep growing and enjoying Steemit :)

First thank you very much for taking the time to explain the situation and your story. I think it is helpful for others to see coming from the "veterans", especially the newbies like me :) ...

I agree with your explanation about people's motivations and how it compares to other forms of work, and while people might not know it by the amount of posts I've made here in the 9 days, I too have a full time job. My job happens to be in the slow season (I'm in finance and the market drys up at the end of the year), so it gave me some extra time to learn about steemit and get to meet the people both joining and the long-termers.

After immersing myself for the past 9 days, I love the way the platform works. It is well designed with real incentives to encourage people to participate. It has real potential to do things beyond everyone's wildest imagination. I simply love what it can do financially for people all over the world, and also the ways in which it can integrate people together. I have met more interesting people here in the last 9 days than I have met in the last 9 years That is amazing when you think about it.

I thank you for the encouragement and appreciate your reaching out to help others. I too love this place and will continue to try to make it a better place every day!

Stay in touch and again thanks for taking the time to comment :)

I'm now a follower of your series ;) and wow 50 posts per day! I need to master the art of speed reading but still being able to really understand each post. I'm not a native English speaker so my pick up isn't as fast. And same with you, I earn more in sincerely commenting.
Can't wait for the next noob lesson :)

I have seen you out there talking with many authors @wanderlass and you are doing a terrific job! You are very sincere and also very helpful to others. I'm happy to be connected to you :)

and ps... if you have any requests for me to talk about, just let me know (I always like getting tips from my fellow noobs) lol

Thank you @davemccoy I'm glad to be connected with you as well. I actually have a lot of questions on how to be successful here. But for now, I'll wait for your next lessons :)

:) I'm glad to be connected to you too!

And I'm glad you are patient, but if you need anything don't hesitate to ask )

Thank you very much for all your help @davemccoy :)

Excellent way to start your Steemit blogging, sharing your experience with others.
I have picked this post and featured it in my Comment Challenge. I hope it will bring you something good. Please keep up the good work!

Thank you very much @danielsaori that is a very nice thing to do. I appreciate you taking the time to both read it and to feature it, that is something good in itself! I also appreciate the encouragement from a veteran too, because it helps my fellow "newbies" realize that you guys read our posts too! Happy New Year!

You're welcome!
I'm really pleased to see you are spending so much time and effort delivering well-written comments. It is extremely important early on, for networking and to promote yourself. It will definitely pay off. Happy New Year!

Thank you again for your time to comment and share (and of course the upvote too)...

And I agree with you that spending some quality time trying to help others understand how the system works (especially new ones) is valuable for all involved (authors, newbies, investors, and just lovers of the social aspect). That is what I hope to communicate so that many can experience the full potential ahead! And Happy New Year to you too @danielsaori :)

Thanks for resteeming this @danielsaori, the comment quality here is just outstanding. You're cool @davemccoy, I would say you're a feedback professional. I'm learning from you guys. Saved this post to return to it later when I need inspiration for quality comments! :)

That is nice @vitkolesnik, I'm pleased you think I'm cool :)

and lol, I'm not a feedback professional but thanks for the compliment :)

I'm happy you are learning from us and just as importantly I'm happy that the bigger steemers are showing up to comment to give the "newbies" the validation of what works!!!

Again, thank you for the very kind comments and I hope you have a terrific new year!

I re-steemed, so you can make more money, enjoy

Thank you so much @deliberator, that is awesome! And getting more of us "newbies" to understand how things work is worth more than the money. Its how we all prosper together :)

Hey @davemccoy! As always a great post! It is a lot of fun to slowly understand the complex mechanisms of Steemit and to slowly see it translating into getting followers and people reading your posts. I also wanted to thank you for following me on my first day! It really gave me a motivation boost! Cheers!

First thank you very much @lesshorrible for reading and commenting about your experience :)

And I also appreciate the compliment and hearing the fact that I helped to motivate you... That is actually a goal of mine, to help people improve their ability to succeed here, so hearing I got you on day one is fantastic and makes it all worthwhile :)

And yes, steemit is complex but that is always what makes it so fun!!! There's lots to learn and new things to see every day. And the biggest benefit is getting to know new people, like the connection we have made (I remember your first post).

Happy New Year and don't forget to enter this post in that contest, you might just be the recipient of the nice prize! :)

Once again a fantastic post. I love the way that you make things so simple and straight forward for other newbies. You've only been on here a few days longer than I have and you're already a real asset to this community.
You also practice what you preach, especially in terms of maintaining a good reputation. You've always responded to my comments and I've found your advice invaluable.
I'm not an expert in anything, more a jack of all trades really, so I'm taking your advice and getting out into the community. I may not be able to deliver intelligent and articulate articles on current affairs or financial trends, but if I can make someone smile, give them food for thought or a little encouragement then I'm happy.
I particularly like your point about being genuine, it's so easy to hide behind a keyboard but I think people prefer a flawed but honest response to a flawless facade.
Thank you again @davemccoy

Once again you and I are on the same page @looksfarwoman ;) ... I am flattered by your compliments and I also feel you are already an asset too. I know you "get" the concept because you are a natural, and I completely agree with you about making someone smile. Its amazing how that works out for both the giver and the receiver of the smile ;)...

The great thing about my last 9 days has been the new connections I've made. I have truly enjoyed communicating in this format because I think it helps get "out from behind the keyboard" as you so accurately describe. If we want to be part of the community, all we have to do is be genuine and respectful; and after all, that's really not that hard :)

You should copy your comment here and enter it in the contest. Just copy your comment and click this link and follow the directions! Happy new year too :)

https://steemit.com/steemitcommentchallenge/@danielsaori/steemit-comment-challenge-13-usd15-sbd-giveaway-comment-like-a-champ-grow-your-blog-like-a-champ

Thank you. I've copied the link, resteemed your post and look very much forward to your next one. A very Happy New Year to you too.

lol... I'm sorry that I wrote my reply kinda confusing, but that's awesome that you resteemed it ty :) ...

I think I wasn't clear, you need to #1 copy your original comment on this post and #2 then go to the context link and #3 paste the copy into his comment section... You could win 15 SBD which is getting around $100... Sorry about being unclear, but I think your post has a shot to win so I want you to get it entered

LOL. Sorry, it was me who was unclear. I've copied the comments into his comment section. Thanks though, it'd be nice to win, but I would have said it anyway.

I checked on you ;) good job

Reputation has always been a little confusing in how it plays out in the Steemit ecosystem. If you're a newbie you might find yourself getting discouraged when your reputation gets to about 50 or so, and then you don't see changes for a while. Reputation is harder to acquire the higher it goes so don't get discouraged if you don't see it move for a while!

You mentioned commenting on other people's posts, and that's a great tip! There's a lot of steemit users like Cryptoctopus who like to reward users for making great comments on their posts. My vote isn't worth near as much as his, but I like to upvote people who comment on my blogs just the same.

Here's another one though. If you're new and struggling try contributing to Utopian.io! They manually approve all their contributions. So if you make something valuable somebody is guaranteed to see it! You're not going to get that offer anywhere else on Steemit. This can really help you out if you're struggling to get your account noticed and raise your rep! :-)

@michellerhey thank you so much for taking to time to come here and offer some great information. Many of us are just figuring things out and it is always great to have some guidance from our more advanced steemians. I agree with you about the reputation frustration issue you discussed, that's exactly why I wanted to show people where they could see the actual raw calculation (because it moves even if the big number doesnt).

I also thank you for validating my points on how the more experienced people view the comment section. I think most of the new people don't really understand that and it really helps to hear you agree with that point. After all, I am only 9 days here so I can't blame them for a little skepticism :)

I also appreciate you taking the time to give us alternative ways to do things, and since this platform is all about exploration, it gives us one more thing to figure out... (I'm not sure when I'm gonna sleep, but that's ok) :)

I hope you have a very happy new year and once again, thanks for the comments and advice!

I'm about three days in, and I can hardly tell my left from right yet people like you make it so easy for us. It's hard to believe you're only nine days in. Just imagine how much help you've rendered to people in such a small time frame.

I haven't done any research whatsoever on steemit, I do get the idea of the beautiful concept behind its creation. But I also appreciate it sustaining factor...which is value.

Value which oozes out of every written word you type. You have no idea how glad I am you commented on my first post, how grateful I am that I had you commenting.

Admittedly, the rewards lured me into this platform but with someone like you, showing that there is so much more to be done, so much more to be given, I'm beginning to have a re-orientation.

Thanks again!!!

Wow @debbietiyan, that is a very very flattering post. I'm so happy I could help you to see the opportunity here, because one day I know you will shine big on this platform. You really will like what you find and I hope you continue to grow and develop because while this isn't a get rich scheme, it does have the potential to transform financially people's lives. And to me that is something to shoot for :)

Thank you, will try,but i earn something better already,a new steemit friend and a interesting blog to follow.

We think alike @gambit.coin ;) ... Its my pleasure to connect to you!

You have been a quick learner! This took a lot of time for me to understand...
What you write about here shows a lot of interest and engagement, which is valuable on Steemit (like in real life).
I think that you explain about the meaning of reputation in an interesting and also simple to understand way. I would have been happy to read this on my 9th day on Steemit, it should have helped me a lot.
Keep up the good work my friend.

That is very nice of you @kerlund74... I appreciate you taking the time to explain your perspective and experience. It is helpful to all of us newer members when we hear from the longer-term steemers, especially when it is validating what is good. I also want to thank you for the compliments on the article, that respect is awesome to hear. Its nice to meet you and I look forward to staying connected to you! Happy new year :)

Hi Dave. Your post is useful for me and other newbies ;) ..
Thanks for the tips, humble advice and now i know how important reputation is !! ;)

Hey Cheche, nice to see you here on my page :) ... I'm glad you found it... and found my advice useful (hint read the other 2 articles at the bottom of the post as well, they will help you too) ;)

I'm happy you understand how reputation works now and I look forward to seeing yours grow by the day. Just get into whatever things that interest you and you will find some incredible and talented people like you. And be yourself, you are a natural!

Again I'm happy you commented and I thank you for the kind words... I hope you (and your cousin) have a very happy new year and lets have a wonderful and exciting 2018!

I totally agree that you can't fake being real for so long😊 thanks for sharing this tip. I was always wondering how the reputation score increases, now I know. I'll definitly read your other posts. I'm looking for a self explanatory article on how voting power works. The ones I've seen I've never really understood though.

Thanks for the comment and glad I could help to explain the reputation score... I watched my raw number (in the 3rd pic) a lot to find out what made it move. Its really interesting how they put this system together.

As far as the voting power, I wrote an article that may or may not help (I listed in the post, but I see now I didn't do a good job of saying what was in it) here is the link:

https://steemit.com/steemit/@davemccoy/steemit-things-i-ve-learned-in-my-first-7-days-1

As far as anything more precise, I have not found anything more but I'm watching the rate of recharge and (discharge with each vote) to get a feel with how to optimize my voting power.

Again, thanks for the comment and compliment... And stay in touch :)

Thanks😊

Highly informative and self educating keep it up..

I feel like one of those people who jumped right in and not knew how the system worked. I'm not sinking or anything, but now I think I will put in more effort to engagement instead of posting and expecting results without fostering community first. Your write-up was most helpful.

Awesome @jamesartville and thank you for taking the time to tell me! ... You'd be surprised how fast you will meet new people if you make the effort to engage them... This is my 10th day here and I feel like I've known many of my new friends for years! It definitely is something that will give you enjoyment too. Again appreciate the feedback and stay in touch!

Hey! As a newbie this was super helpful! Great insight and ways to track progression within the community. Thanks for creating this post, looking forward to seeing more soon! Cheees!

@zombabejoy thanks for taking the time to let me know it was helpful to you. (and hint: I will have another coming out tomorrow if you want to keep your eyes open)

I'm glad to also connect with you and help you in any way I can. I've been trying to help my fellow classmates with the few things I've figured out. There is much more to go, but together we have an awesome opportunity ahead. :)

Again, thank you for the positive reinforcement... It makes typing these posts worth way more than any money they pay. Cheers to you too stay in touch!!!

No worries! Looking forward to tomorrow's post and hearing more of your journey :)

I must say, a big thumbs up 👍👍👍 to you @davemccoy for putting up this very informative post. I had to read and re-read it, cause it contains somuch information that can transform the life of any minnow here on steemit who comes in contact with it - a true manual for minnows. Surely deserves a resteem.

On the discussion of your reputation and why it matters, I love a quote by Warren Buffet:

'' It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently. ''

It sure takes time and effort to build your reputation here on steemit. There are no short cuts, your money has little to do with your reputation, that's why you can find people with alot of steem power, but yet have a reputation of 25. Only your hard work and midnight candles determines how high you rise in reputation at Steemit. Depending only on the quality of your content, other users, preferably higher-ranked users, will read your content and decorate it continuously with more upvotes.

I use www.steemd.com so much, because it has helped me monitor not just my reputation, but also my steem power, those who upvoted my post, how much steem power was allocated to my post, and so much more. It's really an important weapon you should have in your arsenal, for an effective steemit experience.

To answer your request, a topic I would like you to discuss is '' Understanding the difference between Steem, Steem power, and SBD'', cause during my first days on steemit, I got really confused on the difference between these three.

As a final word, I'll like to state that from what we have learnt from @davemccoy, we should keep one thing in mind as we contemplate the overall importance of reputation score here on steemit : A rich person can very easily become poor, but the hardest working person will always be the richest!

So keep building that reputation and who knows? One day, you might just be the first Steemian to get to Level 100!. Thank you.

omgosh @stellastella that is so awesome of a reply I don't even know where to start... I know I don't really have to say much about it, because its like our minds were already synced :)

First,I thank you so much for finding me (I want to be connected to you FOR SURE). And thank you for both complimenting me and validating the information. The more that others understand how this works, the better for us all. And I can tell by your understanding you will be one of the mentors to many others.

I love the quote by Buffet, it is so true... And I really loved your quote:

"A rich person can very easily become poor, but the hardest working person will always be the richest!"

Again thank you so so much and I'm very excited to be your teammate going forward!

ps... you should enter this post in the contest (for 2 purposes: 1. to have more people see the awesome message and 2. to possibly win a nice 15 SBD payout)

Awwn. Your words are so kind. Thank you so much, I really appreciate. Thank you for the link, you truly have a heart of gold, can't wait to get more posts born from that heart of yours. All the best. I'll surely participate.

Ditto to you too @stellastella... I look very much forward to staying in touch with you! :)

Also, you are the first I've noticed that has learned how to "bold" words inside of a sentence... If you could give me your secret (if its not patented) that would be awesome. I could use another tool to get my points across... (I think people get tired of seeing too many of my basic emphasis tools, so adding bolding might be a little easier on the eyes) ;)

Sure that's true. Okay, if you want to make a word or sentence bold, all you have to do is put two asterics before and after the word or sentence. Example ** hello **, make sure to remove the spaces between the asterics and the 'h' and the 'o'. I left the spaces to emphasize the asterics. I hope this helps. All the best

thanks for the lesson, now I'm going to see if I can follow directions... Hope it works

😊 awesome

thanks teach!

awesome, you are a good teacher! Thank you @stellastella :)

@davemccoy you're so goood i feel like crying! You've put in so much zeal and effort to learn all this, you're being very kind to share your knowledge and then you take your time to reply to every comment! You're too good! And all these in only 9 days! As @bcrafts said, you are a whale in the making, more grease to your elbow bro, i respect your hustle.

@pandygirl that is very nice that you told me such complimentary things... It is always nice to hear that someone appreciates the effort you put into something, and your comment is exactly the kind of thing that keeps me motivated! I can tell when somebody also "gets it" and you are one of those people that I can instantly know about. I am very happy that you found me and commented so now you are connected to me! Together we can make steemit even better than it already is, so here is some of that grease back to your elbow too... We're teammates for the future ;)

ps I forgot to say thank you, so "thank you"

pps. And I forgot this is the post they are giving away prize money to the best comment... You should enter your comment you made here over there and you might win $15 SBD

Is great think what you are doing, helping people to understand how Steemit works. I m new here but with your help i manage to understand that all is matter is the message that You deliver thought a photo or a video, people feel the emotions from a beautyful image or from a post that we can learn Something usefull.

Exactly @doinita.. I knew you were going to figure this out... And you are improving a lot each day! As each day goes by, you will learn how to write more and more and really connect emotionally with the readers of your posts. I'm very happy you are taking the time to learn too... That shows me that the opportunity for you is limitless, because if you work hard, learn, and constantly try to improve; then those are the ingredients to make a real difference in your life.

Thanks @davemccoy! Your posts are so helpful. I read the post about being out of upvotes first. Working my way through your articles. You explain it simply and concisely so someone new (like me) would understand. I look forward to reading (and learning) more!

Awesome @butterb I'm glad you are truly learning from them. I posted them for the purpose of helping and its always good when I get a comment like yours telling me you are reading not one, but several of them. That makes me feel good. :)

Keep reading and learning and testing out what works for you, and as always let me know if you have any questions or help in any way!
