It is not a new API, they just changed the address of their API-node.
It used to be:
https://steemd.steemit.com
Now it is:
https://api.steemit.com
I'm know very, very, very little about techy things. Why would there be such a change? Does that mean now it's up to each app developer to update their own site?

Ha, now that I'm affected I have incentive to care about these things...
:-) Many steem sites are personal projects, developers might be on holiday etc, nobody to blame, we can only give thanks when they update :-)
