If you've ever watched a James Bond movie, Skyfall, you certainly never seen a scene in which there is an abandoned island that was uninhabited. Many felt that the scene on the island was a result of CGI techniques, but did you know that island really exists. Yes, it is an island located in Japan.
Left unoccupied for 40 years
The small island is shaped as if warship known as "Hashima" meaning Battleship Island is located 15 kilometers from Nagasaki. Gunkanjima (Battleship Island in Japanese) is one of the 505 uninhabited islands in Japan. The island is surrounded by a sea wall that had some abandoned concrete buildings and not be disturbed except by nature. It is left unoccupied for more than 40 years.
Owned Mitsubishi Corporation
Built in 1887, covers an area of 16 acres of the island is known for its coal mines in the sea. The island is said to be haunted is developed by Mitsubishi Coporation and believed that the island is right on top of the coal resources. After 100 years, the mine becomes deeper and long harvested the results to help develop industry in Japan.
The highest population density in the world
The island has a 10-floor apartment to accommodate employees who crowded. In addition, there is also a school, a restaurant, swimming pool and much more for the workers live a normal life away on the mainland. The island's highest population peaked in 1959 with a population of 5,259 people and is considered the world's highest population densities ever recorded.
Prisoner of Second World War made an employee
Civilians Korean and Chinese prisoners of war captured during World War II mobilized to work in very harsh conditions and the services provided on the basis of how not to be issued by Japan beginning of 1930 until the end of the Second World War. Approximately 1,300 employees who were deployed off the island as a result of accidents, fatigue and not eating enough. In 1941, the island with an area less than one square kilometer produce 400,000 metric tons of coal a year. Here until the coal is exhausted.
Closed after running out of coal resources
After the coal resources in the island exhausted, Mitsubishi decided to close the island, and it is left since then. Apartment and other buildings became dilapidated and collapsed there. The trees spread in every corner, but blown newspaper. The island is still in the same condition as it was abandoned over 50 years ago.
Listed in the UNESCO World Heritage
The island has become a tourist attraction at one time as it had not been tampered with by anyone and are allowed to be visited by the Japanese government but closed again from 1974 until 2009. This mysterious island was reopened to visit and was approved by the UNESCO World Heritage list on July 5 2015.
