I had no idea the waiting period was that long now, wow! I've been running around compiling a list of useful posts, and including that bit about payment to @anonsteem just put you on it. You are absolutely right though, since I'm finding it difficult to gather info for new users, there is a huge lack in that department here.
To be honest I think these difficulties are intentional, interface included (which is supposed to be addressed in HF20) You've probably heard that the platform is still in beta, my personal feelings on the matter is that by not making it simple, they're ensuring that most of the beginning users are intelligent, purpose-driven, motivated individuals. They want to keep censorship in any official capacity away from steemit, and because of the quality of those the platform has not only attracted but retained, a self-policiing mechanism sprang up that works. I definitely think that was one of the agendas. Also I think they wanted to hold back the tide until they had worked out most of the bugs. (I could be wrong, but this is just what I see)

That's a really good point...by making this place as user unfriendly as it currently is, it's likely "weeding out" lazy individuals looking for an easy way to opt in & cash out.
