RE: In Case You Didn't Notice, Bloomberg Just Published an Article About Steemit: Could be the Facebook Killer

in #steemit7 years ago

Steemit will not be a replacement for Facebook or Twitter, but it will definitely have a major impact on how social media would work in the future. Afterall, we still need Facebook/Twitter/Instagram to drive traffic to our content.

Sort:

As sites like steemfollowers shows us, there is a potential for content creators to reach beyond steemit. Furthermore a post just doesn't have to be a blog, it could be filled with data-subject to steemit's parsers. A common bmp image isn't just a collection of the R G B (bmp may be backwards if I remember right)
pixels, but has another 54 bits or so allocated to describe/format the data. It is the software that presents us the image, defined by the data that we don't see.
i don't think using steemit for data stores has been implemented yet, people like to use their own servers-or they prefer to use whats already on the market instead of going through the expense of creating new things-that may not pay off. But it is in the realm of possibilities.
A real estate company for example may keep their data on their own servers, but link a posting anyways to steem it. Because the data is stored in a database, they need not store data on steemit. But publishing it on steemit reaches a new audience for free and potential revenue from there, and they could map the upvote feature to their own website-much as steemfollower does-into their own website. Users could save "upvote" homes they like from the webpage which the upvote is stored in the block chain. After it is "saved" once, further records of saved or deleted for that same property are handled not on the blockchain but in their own database.
The same could be said for more nobel causes like a no kill skelter, so people could save/resteem/share the animals that the like.

As far as data. Let us suppose a small user company created a website that featured local, national, entertainment, sport news....or say something that looks like the drudge report. The title of a steem post could be used to tell what category to file a news story under.
inside the steemit posts is a url to the news article. Such a post would seem like garbage and easily lost on the present steemit system. But the projects webserver can access the block chain (doesn't have to do this often, for once it is in memory it can stay in memory), and they could of course implement the upvote system as well as incorporate a steemit powered based comment section masked behind their own interface.
as more projects are implemented, you'll probably find content management companies trying to provide a one shoe fits all solution to the newer guys who aren't tech savvy.

But who knows what the future will bring, eh?

Have you checked out IPFS? It works quite well alongside with Steemit, i.e. powering DTube and DSound, much better than steem for storing significant amounts of data ... with the catch that data won't necessary last forever on IPFS.
