Great post Paula its good to get some discussion and views going on this topic that focus on our corner of the globe.
There was a talk at Arthur Cox in Dublin a few weeks ago where they gave their views on Crypto and Taxation in Ireland.
It got me thinking a lot about it. As you may expect there was no clear answers, the theme on the evening was "it depends" but they did pose a few interesting questions:
Is there an argument to make that investing in Crypto is Gambling?
In some instances maybe and if so then there is 0 tax payable in Ireland. Is it an asset or a currency?
Bitcoin transactions in the EU are exempt from Vat. What about Steem? Are you a company?
Not able to claim back VAT and liable to Corporation tax rates.
I am no way qualified as an advisor but the mood to me seemed to be if your mining crypto then you probably are due to pay Capital Gains tax at 33% when you convert it to Fiat.
When we earn money on Steem thorough posting we are mining Crypto. (Well that is one view at least)
The clear message from Arthur Cox was every case is unique and it is important to get bespoke advice and be proactive.
