I follow quite a limited bunch of people, and upvote mostly the same ones day in and day out, because I like them and they have content that interests me. When the crypto market keeps dropping, Steemit has been getting more quiet and I have to make more of an effort to find content to upvote. I have been thinking for a while already that I should spread my votes a little wider, but haven’t had the time to actively search for new people to follow. Today I finally decided to go deep inside Steemit and really look for something outside of my usual playground.
I’m gonna dive head first into the deep end, aka the New-section, gulp!
Let’s start by saying that I’m very picky and my standards are high. I’m trying to find people and content I haven’t yet seen before, and that entertain or educate me, in the fields I’m interested in.
Filter out languages I don’t understand, memes, TA’s, blatant plagiarism, posts with no photos, horrible grammar mistakes in the headline and in the first sentence, and of course subjects that do not interest me, like football.
I’ve been scrolling the New-section for about a half an hour without even opening a post…. but I’m not giving up, there must be something worth my read!
Meme meme plagiarism meme plagiarism plagiarism basic quote one bad picture with one line of text one good picture clearly stolen. I feel like there is 99% more posts that I want to flag, instead of upvote, but I’m not gonna waste my voting power for posts that are going to go unnoticed anyways.
Oh this seems like a good one, let’s open it up. Nice picture, good headline, travel and architecture related. For fucks sake, another Steepshot one liner, what a waste of time. More memes, more plagiarism, the list goes on. Finally one decent post, no surprise, from already an established Steemian. Scroll down an hour more to find another good post, once again, from already an established user who has been uploading consistently for over a year.
More spam, plagiarism and one liners. I’m done.
Conclusion
It’s very very very hard to find quality content!
People should shut the fuck up about not getting rewards and noticed when the posts they produce are absolute garbage, there is hardly anything that makes me even want to open a post, let alone to upvote and follow the person for more.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS MATTER! Headline, first sentence and the image are the most important things, especially when you are just starting out and don’t have a following yet.
It seems that I’ll mostly be sticking with the quality people/content I have already found in Steemit throughout the year, only every now and then adding a new person on the Follow list. Usually the new additions to my following-list come through people I’m already following, their friends or recommendations, or the new people that leave me comments and when I check back, I sometimes find something interesting.
I have done this too, I always can't believe how little good content there is here, but at least when I do find someone with good content it really stands out! I try and stick to topics I like, like photography, travel and art and just keep searching... but it does get hard !
I'm always super excited when I find a new (to me) user that has great, consistent content and I try to make sure to stick with them because there really is not much great content out there! You are definitely one of my favourites in the photography category🤗
Awww thank you! Your one of mine too! :)
I have no fucking clue what you like...but you're right, there's a lot of garbage here. There's also a lot of good posts...though not all of them will have perfect English, since they are written by non-native speakers.
What really sucks is that a lot of the really good posters have quit, because it's so frustrating. I wonder how I ever got started with a blog back in the day. I don't think it was any easier. Maybe it was... This place has a lot of dead accounts, and not a ton of active anymore.
Well, I like pictures and witty writing, but I'm veryveryvery picky, in everything. I am not a native English speaker either, and I do understand that not everyone can be as good at it, but it hurts me to read very bad English, it's not entertaining to me.
Damn I miss a few people who I was so excited when I found them, and now they are gone :(
I've actually thought that I might do an experiment at some point, start another blog, incognito, to see how hard it would be to get noticed these days. But I don't have enough time for that now if I want to keep this one going strong.
There's so much shit content out there, it's actually almost easy to get curied these days...but noticed? Ehh...
You should check out @c-squared. It's a curation group. Not everything they curate will be up to your standards likely, but it has been easier for myself to curate since I've started following them. When I'm really hurting for something to curate, I check out their discord. https://discord.gg/B8JFmJ4
I wish I could give you some suggestions but I honestly struggle even more finding new people to follow cause I don't have much time to spend here on Steemit. All I know is that whenever I open it, you're one of those people that I always check to see if they have posted something new :) the other is my sister, a friend, maybe 2-3 more.. and that's it. I've followed many people but I'm somehow no longer interested in opening their posts on my feed, I only scroll down and I'm too lazy to unfollow them. I wish there were more people like you here so that I could give you those suggestions :D but honestly it sucks that there are only a few who post the content I'm actually interested in
Aww girl, that is so sweet of you to say, thank you so much! ☺️ I am the same, I follow quite a few people, a bunch that I never really upvote because they don't excite me that much. Should really go through the list and weed out the inactive accounts and people that don't excite me enough.
I run into the exact same problem. And like you, no time to do it.
Often I find new contact by serendipitous posts. The other day, I found someone by following a comment posted to ... one of your posts!
I think I find most new people when they find me first, so I'll just sit here like a queen and wait for the jesters to entertain me. And off with their heads if they don't!
Let's give you a quick recommendation. Want to see photography? Check him. Quality posts and great photos @alequandro
Thanks for the recommendation, looks right up my alley!
If it is quality you need
Just look to your feed
If you want to branch out
You'll find it harder, no doubt
If you find something new
Where the selections are few
Give an upvote and shout
"Fuck this, I'm out"
You really are a poetry machine!
'fries before guys' 😆😆 lol your shirt :p :p
it's definitely annoying how there's a lot of weak content, like people throw up a post hoping for votes rather than because they're really inspired to post it.
It's cool to get rewards, but I guess that's the other side of the coin. It'll be better if/when it's bigger and more people are using it just as their normal blog and social media. Right now it's kind of a mix of sincere users and people trying to hustle an upvote.
::shrugs::
I always say that if one wants to get the good upvotes, you need to put in the work first. Show the passion and consistency, nobody is gonna start upvoting some shitty memes and one line posts to encourage one to put out better content.
haha! you sound like the voice in my head every time i try to find new content too @eveuncovered!
You hear my voice in your head, that is scary, better get that checked out 😝
lol. I would but my therapist can't cope anymore - i think i broke him haha
The new feed is an absolute disaster. I rarely dive into that feed to be honest. I tend to click on the tags that interest me and click new under that.
But if you want to read about beer and my photographing of feathered things then feel free to check my stuff out.
I also write about crypto from time to time. So that might interest you. I also publish via Steem Press, so to do that, you have to write at a decent standard. I tend to think my stuff is of reasonable quality but you can be the judge of that. :)
Edit: I've been a follower of yours for ages, I just rarely comment.
I usually go to a specific tag, and hot-section to find something of interest, but this time I wanted to really see a bigger picture of what is out there. I wasn't impressed.
I'm sorry but I'm not a fan of beer, or birds, or reading about crypto, but I will check you out anyways, maybe you can surprise me.
I don't remember seeing you anywhere in my blog before, so glad to make your acquaintance :)
No harm if my content isn't your thing. I don't get upset if people don't like my stuff.
Glad to meet you as well. I should actually comment more on the stuff I read and enjoy. I think we get into a routine of only commenting on the content of the people who we interact with on a regular basis.
I struggle finding people that I want to follow as well. Agreed, the new section is a waste of time, and even the hot section requires a lot of filtering. I don't have much time on steemit, so when I do I don't want to waste it browsing hopelessly. I have a lot on my feed I need to winnow down. Maybe I'm a snob, or this just isn't my style? Idk. I'm going to keep looking though :)
Well if you are a snob, then I'm also, though that probably doesn't surprise anyone... I am on Steemit a lot but because my main focus is in creating content, I don't have time to use hours and hours to find something of interest, if I can find it elsewhere much easier. I think that is the problem here, there is good content, but ain't nobody got time to find it!
May I interest you in some poetry/fiction that skirt on dark themes?
You know where to find this :)
I was actually just thinking the same thing. Especially in the photography section, which I mostly follow there is a huge amount of low quality photos, or even worse, stolen work, which is very off putting. Once you find talented authors with content you like, you kind of stay in that circle. I can imagine it is very similar in the blog section:)
It's a pain in the ass to try and weed out the genuine content from the ripped one, and I'm very anal about that. I really like my circle but it wouldn't hurt to add more people to it, keep it fresh and more diverse.
edit: added you on the circle, though I give a little more sparingly to posts with only one photo, I want more!
Glad to be in your circle, I am not much of a writer but I’ll do my best:)
the new section is terrible, the best is the "hot" section. Or better than that is to choose the tabs of subjects that actually interest you.
Yeah I usually go to photography/travel and hot section, but I was willing to waste my time to see if there is something undervalued, hidden in the new-section. And there wasn't. Though obviously I can't keep scrolling it all day every day.
the only utility to it that I could see is if you wanted to maximize your curation rewards for some strange reason and wanted to try to vote on posts that were a certain number of minutes old that you thought would do well. But curation awards don't seem worth much effort.
I don't actually care about curation rewards, they are such a small revenue, it's much better for me to use my time to work on my own blog. When I like something, I like it, no matter if it's under 5 minutes, or over 35, doesn't make a difference to me. Different story if I had tens of thousands in Steem Power.
If that was me I would be too busy upvoting myself to upvote anyone else!
i like to swipe photography and travel section of steemit but i now a days i look for fifa worldcup 2018 news : )
just you wait
I don't like surprises!
we'll live with that
I believe that there is a lot of content that is very good that goes unseen, people just don't have the time to go through all of the articles that pop up every few seconds. So just a quick view will not let you see what could be to your liking.
💅🏻
Pink is not really my colour.
I think it's important to browse the new section because you can find interesting people, not only the content I prefer, but more friends and people to build with.
Sure you can, all the posts appear on there, but I ain't got time to go through 99% shit to find that 1% that is diamond.
Lol. Your right. I try to look over garbage as quickly as possible. 99% Haha. Spam is sad.
Not a writer but trying to catch a mood in pictures.
I'm not going to claim to have any answers, or rise to the challenge of entertaining you (unless you like fairly a fairly random and eclectic set of pictures taken on my phone of anything that takes my interest at the time); but as a new steemian I definitely share your pain with finding quality content.
I'd definitely be interested in an update post of things that do entertain you and you feel are worth checking out and showing some support for on here :)
Oh @eveuncovered, you make me smile. I hear myself a little too when I read this. I hope you find some inspiration out there, no one said it would be easy, I am going to follow you though out of curiosity to see how your journey continues. Namaste ☺️
I try this every now and then too.. its so hard to find good content. It really raises my respect levels for the curators that do find the quality gems. They must be at it for hours and hours every day!
Not been on here for a while, and thought it was about time i put some more content in to my blog again, and, to keep running with the crypto theme, BUT, avoiding the typical price analysis posts. Instead i've started putting together some short stories... short stories that i'm sure people can relate to, is something that crypto is sorely lacking, and in time, i'd love to hear...
"You in it for the tech mate?"
"Nah... in it for the llama stories"
:)

Same reasons I bitch about the content on Steemit all the time.
I think you should bitch more, it's entertaining.
