Hello,
I am a new user -- I walked in off the street (literally, have a look at my intro post!) and decided that steemit might be a good place for me to post my travel stories and pictures.
After joining, reading and posting, I'm slightly confused. It seems like a relatively small number of people allocate most of the steem.
To try to understand the effect of this, I downloaded the list of steemit's 100 richest users. I then visited each of their blog pages to see how they participate in the site. After collecting my data, I found that 15% post frequently (more than 1 post in the past week), 68% don't post (no posts in the past 2 months), and 17% post only intermittently.
I'm still trying to evaluate steemit's appetite for non-coin related content. Rather than simply posting, I would like to start a discussion. What effect do non-participating whales have on the system?

There are huge problems such as I could get every vote from every user, except the whales and still not trend. That is a problem in several ways.
