Steemit is a relatively new company, founded in early 2016 by Ned Scott and Daniel Larimer.

Another way users can get paid is through the source and up-voting popular content. Previous someone up-voting posts that became popular, the more is the reward.
Users paid half in 'Steem Power (currency vesting) and half in Steem Dollars, which can be exchanged for US dollars.
CTO Dan Larimer said to CoinTelegraph:
"Steemit is a new way to recognize contributors online, especially those who join our community early and stay long term, new users will be given the portion Steem when they sign up, and those who start or improve the quality of discussion, through persuasion, clarity, grammar and format , will be upvoted faster and more precise appreciated."
How multiple account creation prevented?
One of the banes of the award users for posting is that people try to game the system by creating multiple accounts.
This account can be used to send / voice several times and thus manipulate the popularity of posts.
Steemit trying to control this by requiring users to sign in with their Facebook account.
This concept is not new
The concept of sharing advertising revenue with the users is not new. At the beginning of 2014, sites like Bubblews and Bonzo Me came out with the idea of paying users to generate content.
These sites use Paypal to make a payment. Bubblews closed in November 2015.
Taringa, Argentina's largest social networking site, tips on Bitcoins users to post and share content.
It does not cause users to migrate in droves from Facebook and other social networking sites. It remains to be seen how successful Steemit is in attracting users.
