My speculation is that they don't want to expose any more people to a potential hack. They probably are watching the system carefully until they are certain that it is relatively secure. Then they will open the doors and the rest of the world will come rushing in.
I think this is simpler than it sounds. They simply don't have the backend to handle so many users. Which explains why we have been getting errors off and on. So, they are probably going to expand their servers before membership opens again.
