With a net worth of $1.8 billion, Real Madrid C.F. #president Florentino Perez falls into the list of the 15 richest Spanish people and one of the most winning presidents in the club’s history.
Graduated in civil engineering, in 1997 he became CEO of ACS Group: leading construction company quoted in the #IBEX35 with total equity of €4.658 billion.
In the year 2000, Pérez finally won the election for the presidency of Real Madrid after a #campaign mainly based on the promise to bring in Luís Figo from the rivals of F.C. Barcelona. Luís Figo’s €62 million acquisition represented a world-record transfer fee but also the first step of Pérez’s famous #Galácticos Policy, consisting on buying at least one world-class superstar player (a “galáctico") each summer.
Initially, #investments on players didn't actually payed in terms of trophies: the first years of Perez presidency saw Barcelona’s dominance in La Liga and weak results for Real Madrid in the Champions League: however, in 2005, the club became the richest team in terms of #revenues. The reason is mainly given to David Beckham’s acquisition in 2003, that gave to the club great #advertising potential around the world, especially in Asia.
During his current term, started in 2009, he has paid more than €800 million on player purchases (€336 million just for Cristiano Ronaldo, Kakà, Bale and Di Maria): in fact, the team has become predominant in Spanish and European competitions and, reaching a €969 million #market value, it is now the third most valuable soccer team in the world.
What do you think about Florentino Pérez’s policy? Is the risk given by several years of market deficit worth it? What was the key strategy in order not to fall in a economic chasm?
