I THINK I JUST FOUND A STEEMIT EXPLOIT!

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

I was just looking through the crypto posts like I normally do and found a post with nothing but a picture of a chart. I noticed the post was worth 5c from 2 people and thought to myself, who upvotes a picture of a chart with nothing else. It turns out one of the 2 upvotes was from @promoted .

I then checked previous posts by the same account and noticed that every post was promoted by $0.00 yet had an upvote from @promoted. This account is spamming these post's and I wonder if this became widespread would it cause much of a problem?

It would not take a stretch of the imagination to imagine that if it is being done on those posts then it is surely being done on others.

Can something like this lead to huge amounts of spam on steemit?

Just consider, if 100 accounts make $5 a day from 100 posts, that is 10,000 spammy posts a day which could easily be avoided.

100% upvote for u

Thanks. Any idea who I should try contact about it? No matter how I think about it, this could quite easily become a problem. If this is spread across all tags with multiple accounts with each account only posting every 5-10 minutes it could easily continue unnoticed.

Anything that encourages spam should be snuffed out.

So I am kind of confused. Are you saying the post says it is promoted $0.00 and it still receives an upvote from @promoted?

@promoted is just a nice service for users that use the "promoted" feature. https://steemit.com/steem/@heimindanger/don-t-use-vote-selling-bots-use-promoted-instead-a-bot-that-upvotes-you-when-you-burn-money

Could it simply be possible that a user chose the minimum Minimum: 0.001 SBD burned => 0.01% upvote and that displays as $0.00 since it is rounded so low?

That is exactly what happened but up until 3 minutes ago I was under the impression the @promoted account was more than just a bot. It is still super spammy and what you have said is what is happening exactly. I have recommended to the devs to increase minimum vote to $0.01

I thought @promoted was more central to the blockchain than just a bot so kind of feel stupid for overreacting a wee bit. Still will create a massive spam problem though

I think promoted gives back to the rewards pool. And @promoted gives back to those users that use it.

Followed. I enjoy people who are happy to add info and even offer an alternative perspective from the main article. I have chatted with @gnimeets a few times in the past and have always found him to be honest, helpful, and insightful.

I love that your comment shows real thought @netuoso. It shows that you actually read the articles. This is important if we want to have quality over quantity.

Good job to you both. @gnimeets I may have a cheeky little ICO tip for you. I know it's too late for the competition but I've got one for you to look at anyway. Please only invest what you can afford to lose but check out https://eventchain.io/#home .

In full disclosure, I was personally invited by CEO Ashton Addison to contribute to ideas for EventChain. I have not been asked to accept any official role but would certainly consider working with the EventChain Team if the opportunity arises. I have spoken with the PIVX team and they are fine with this.

I am still working out the finer points of the EventChain investment myself, but I trust Ashton to work hard to do his best. I know this application of blockchain does address a real world issue, and just like my work with Encrypgen and PIVX, win, lose or draw I am happy to support the development of coins with a genuine goal to make a better world for the next generation.

I know you like some thought in your content. One of the few people who will put up with my long-winded writing style. lol

For anyone else who has made it this far and is considering investments in any of the coins I have mention, please follow the golden rule: ONLY INVEST WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD TO LOSE!

Cheers,

Fish

Nice looking out bud! I will look into it this evening. Must just announce the winner of the competition in the next few minutes.

It's funny that you think your style of writing is longwinded when I think it is just good conversational skills. I enjoy chatting to people and often my conversations are pushed off the main page due to the length.

For me steemit is a place to voice my opinion rather than make money. If I make anything while doing it then happy days!

Again bud I appreciate having you around. Your a super duper kind of guy!

Some day we will have a pint together :)

You are missing the point though. One account spamming @promoted to make $10-$15 a day is no biggie, but 10 or a 100 is a different story. Makes no difference to the rewards but it does make a big difference to everyones experience on steemit.

If 100 accounts make $5 a day on it then that is 10000 spam posts in a single day.

Congratulations @gnimeets! You have completed some achievement on Steemit and have been rewarded with new badge(s) :

I am asking Steemit to give me money right now like Jerry maybe did or maybe did not do allegedly and stuff. I can ask for money. I can tell you and everybody to give me money. I want money to do bad stuff with it. But you do not have to give me money. But I can ask you for money. I have the freedom to ask everybody everywhere for money. That is capitalism. Maybe you like anarchy or maybe you like communism.

I have never had an issue with Jerry asking for money. You had an issue with my response and continue to fight rather than just admit your wrong.

You got a great vocabulary but you use it very ineffectively. I rarely lose a logical argument.

You are lying. You lied. You continue to say that I am wrong. You did not say what I was wrong about. You did not make a point to why or how I was wrong. You did not say it. You said I changed. I did not change. You made accusations with evidence. You made assumptions and judgments without evidence or proof. Please tell me what I did. You said I changed in the middle of a conversation. I did not do that. You lied. You are lying. Maybe, you do not know that. Maybe, you think you are honest. Maybe, you are unaware of the irony, the paradox.

Your making me giggle. I have made no assumptions. I directly quoted you. You have not responded to one point nor have you made any point.

You were wrong in the sense that you said Jerry can do whatever he wants with his own money. That was your basis for the argument because you did not read the post correctly and took me up wrong. Yet when I pointed out that jerry asked steemit for money you changed what you are arguing about to say its ok to ask for money and I am an anarchist.

That is not consistent and only arguing for the sake of arguing without any meaningful input into the conversation.

Why do you want me to keep repeating the same things? How about you actually answer the questions rather than this poor trolling.

You are not doing yourself any favors here.

Also please take this back to the original thread or I will be forced to flag you.
