The Rewarding Social Media: Sweat Equity

The content you post on online media platform carries an intrinsic value.

The Internet is a magical place.

It has shaped and changed everything around us, from our businesses to our daily routines, and how we communicate and share.

The open communities and free content have made Internet invaluable.

The Unpaid Artists

People around the globe, create and post content on various internet platforms.

This content, be it information, knowledge, art, photos, videos, blogs or anything, this data is what makes the platforms both, useful and valuable.

And we know that people are happy to share useful things on the Internet to make this world a better place.

But, the millions of people who contribute on the Internet every day are like unpaid artists.

The Concept of Sweat Equity for Internet Platforms is exciting

All forms of capital are equally valuable. This means that those who contribute their scarce time and attention toward producing and curating content for others are just as valuable as those who contribute their scarce cash. This is the sweat equity principle and is a concept that prior cryptocurrencies have often had trouble providing to more than a few dozen individuals. — Steem white paper

That is really exciting. What these platforms like steemit and dtube are doing is new and challenging. But we are likely to see more and more similar services being built on the concept of sweat equity.

As we are moving the towards web 3.0 or as experts call it the ‘Internet of Value’. The transparency and ownership of the content that users post will improve. This kind of platforms will run on the basis of the value they create and share with all the stakeholders in the system.

Time Investments are Real Investments

The time that creators invest in building and growing a community around any Internet platform is equivalent to real investments.

This is just one story. And it shows how much work goes behind the scene, the efforts that creators put in to produce a piece of art. This could be true for all the creative professions or people in similar domains.

Yet the creators put it on the Internet for free for the communities and to gain some audience. In return, the Internet platforms sell their attention, interests, and behavior to the advertisers without bringing any real value to the creator.

It is very early to say what shape the rewarding platforms will take in long run.
But whatever shape they take, they will be more inclined towards providing real value to the communities.

These were my quick thoughts on the ‘Rewarding Social Media Platforms’, what do you think? leave your views in comments.
