Let's Talk About Followers! - Follow 4 Follow? - Not A Good Idea. Not On Steemit!

in #steemit7 years ago

Dear Steemians

I've been talking about followers in my last couple of posts and not only that, you've most likely read other posts about followers and the importance of a follower-base during these last few days too.

Followers have and always will be one of the most important things in business, but obviously on Social Media and on Steemit too. - Just take a quick look at;

  • Selena Gomez - 121 million followers on Instagram.
  • PewDiePie - 55,1 million subscribers on YouTube.
  • Lirik - 1,6 millions followers on Twitch.

And on Steemit:

Note: There's probably several other amazing Steemians out there with more or similar amounts of followers, but I chose to go with Stellabelle. Make sure to follow her if you haven't already!

Let's continue

  • You've probably seen an image or a message like this somewhere, right?

Let me explain this in-depth for all of you..
Follow 4 follow is a decent way to get followers on Instagram for instance. Especially if you have a new account. You'll be able to get hundreds of new followers in minutes. If you do it properly. - However, I don't encourage people to do it on Steemit!

Let's take a leap of faith and dive right into this

Now, I'll give you a better understanding.. Or at least, I'll share some details and my own thoughts about this.. - After all, the best thing I can do right now is to back my words, right?

For starters, I'll share some details from my Steemit account:

follow.png

  • 419 followers at the time I'm writing this.

The next thing I'll show you is this:

follow4.png

  • 401 followers and that post was from yesterday.

That's 18 new followers in one day.

  • Pretty awesome results, don't you think?

It's vital to socialize and to talk with people.

As many of you already know, I've recently started to stream on Twitch and I've also recently started to share gaming related content here on Steemit.

I know there's a bunch of images & screenshots by now, but a picture is worth a thousand words.. So I'll share some more:

And last but not least:
follow3.png

  • This is from SEOClerks. A marketplace I work on.

With this being said..

  • I know what I'm doing. At least I'm doing something right.

Hear me out fellow Steemians..
I still consider myself to be "seaweed" on Steemit. I still consider myself to be a "nobody", and I probably will do that for a very, very long time. No matter how many followers I get.

My potential rewards on this post or any future post won't change that either.. - And you know why?

  • Because I need to see myself from that perspective.

I see myself as an "underdog", and I do it on purpose.. - In most things in life.

  • And I do it because it gives me motivation!

Back at it again..

The results I showed you above.. They aren't insane, incredible or awesome in any way..

  • I consider them to be good.

A quick note before I continue this long post: - I never compare my own results with others!

Let's continue..

I will ask you one simple question.

  • Would you rather have tons of followers that doesn't interact with you or your content or only a handful of followers who gives a damn about you and your content?

I'd go with a handful of followers every day of the week!

If you have 1 follower who already follow 500 other people.. - What are the odds for that specific follower to read your post? - Slim to none.

If you follow 500 people, would you read all of their posts?

  • Probably not.

And that's why "follow 4 follow" on Steemit is stupid!

We all know it.. Quantity is outstanding, but quality is even better.

You've probably seen the Trending page by now.. A quick peek and we can see posts with 500+, 600+ and 700+ votes. - Quantity.

However, these are not necessarily the posts with the highest potential rewards..

compare.png

As you can see, the post with more votes have less potential reward.

So, let's call that quality.

  • The post with less amounts of votes have more quality votes. - I hope you get my point?

Imagine this..

You visit Steemit and you're going through your feed. That's where all posts from the people you follow will show up.

  • You see one post after the other..

You'll probably vote on a handful of them. - No one have the energy to go through all of them.

  • Which also could be one of the factors for people to upvote posts that has lower quality than similar ones.. Due to lack of time. - Or energy. - Or both.

One of the reasons for things like that to happen, could be, because they follow hundreds of people...

They simply miss out on "the good stuff!"

Have you seen that guy wearing black?

Gain your followers the proper way. - Work hard & Share Quality!

Sort:

Having a few faithful followers that actually "read your stuff" is better than number of followers who just scroll and upvote.

If I spend time to pour my heart out in a post. The financial gain is a benefit... but having people thank you and appreciate it who actually read it is even more rewarding. :)

So I agree with your statement:

Would you rather have tons of followers that doesn't interact with you or your content or only a handful of followers who gives a damn about you and your content?

I'd go with a handful of followers every day of the week!

:) Thank you :)

I couldn't agree with you more!

Rewards are obviously amazing in every way but one should never forget that "rewards" doesn't have to be in terms of money. Rewards to me are more than that. Upvotes & comments for instance.

I have no idea how I would follow 1000 people, let alone 1,000,000. Category tags are a way to prioritize, but the chaos is fun too.

Yeah, it's pretty insane to keep track of those people.. Good luck finding "gems" to read. :D

There are useful ways to narrow things down. Looking at the follow(ing/er) lists of the writers I enjoy provides good results sometimes. There are some better places to look than others. By analogy, I don't go digging for fossils in my front yard. They are all over the place, but I'm more likely to find them near or in rock strata.

Well put. It defiantly takes hard work & consistency to get to "the boss level".

Btw, I've also noticed I've gained a bunch of new followers in the last week or so, not that I've posted tons on great articles in that time. Maybe there's a bunch of new users recently due to the steem price rise?

You know how it is, you sign up and start clicking on everything that looks like a button. I can't keep up anymore. I visit the 'new' feed twice a week so I don't end up in an echo chamber, but there are awesome numbers of people joining every day now. My home feed is almost unmanageable.

You just got another follower ;)

  • Well, I can't say the reason for it. Perhaps due to what you've said. Hopefully, because people like the content you share. No matter if it's posts or comments. :)

Good thoughts.

Thank you, I appreciate it :)

Quality over quantity! It works in many scenarios.....same as friends...better to have a few good friends than hundreds of acquaintances that wont show up when you need them! I have definitely been reading more posts about followers lately...must be an important topic :)

follow me and ill follow u upvote and resteem my stuff and ill do the same 4 u

Thank you! I couldn't agree more! I have actually been considering paring down the number of people I follow - so that I only have posts in my feed that are very interesting to me. And, likewise, as you say - it is way more meaningful to me to have followers who respond & comment on my posts. There are a handful of people on here who I have been interacting with on a fairly regular basis now- and that (to Me) is priceless! It's what "social" media should be all about. Thank you!

Good read that.

Thanks @hitmeasap.

Good stuff, I guess to break it down, best thing you can do is start following the people that post the things you like in whatever category that may be.

Step 2 I'd imagine would be to get involved with the crowds through your feed and try to provide the best answers you can, so you can eventually bring up the number of followers and make it easier for your posts to be upvoted...

First of all, thanks for sharing this.
Actually I'm a blogger and writing content on latest upcoming ICOs.
And through this platform i need more number of followers to read the relevant contents.
